You can thank the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 for some of the biggest Medicare changes in the past few years โ€” including a welcome reprieve from the high costs of prescription drugs.

No extra premium? Probably safe. โ€œThe zero-dollar premium is really attractive to people and one of the easiest ways to compare across plans,โ€ she says. But a plan may change its formulary, which is its list of covered drugs;

 

The above was in the section of the article concerning Medicare Advantage.  This can also happen in Supplemental coverage.  It did happen to me one year.  The company I was with dropped a blood pressure medication I was taking, costing about $35/month and recommended a substitute that was over $1k/month.  The original was a pill with two combined medicines.  I ended up getting separate pills for each medicine that was covered, and the total cost to me per month was $0.00.  Pays to check even if the formulary doesn't change!

You'll save thousands if you are paying more than the average per year for prescriptions, but this that have few prescriptions and pay little, may end up paying a lot more for premiums for a Part D plan, because a lot of the cost above the $2k max cap will be born by the insurance companies you purchase the Part D plan from.  We will find out how much on or shortly before October 15th.
