Preventing Age 50+ Homelessness ๐ก
๐ฅThis discussion was created on Saturday - April 17, 2021๐ฅ
Prevention is cheaper, versus rescuing us after we have become homeless!
- What measures you as one person can do to perhaps prevent your homelessness or another age 50+ person's homelessness?
- Let us discuss this onging crisis ๐
๐กMY PLAN TO HELP
I am encouraging the folks with extra $$$$ to spare to invest in building Tiny Cottages to rent to us in my location.
๐กWHY I CARE
It took me being homeless July 2017 to August 2018 to care. Up to that season in my life, life was stable. It took being laid off 3 times in my 50's for reality to kick in. Lol, have no desire to be homeless agsin with me now living on Social Security alone. Yes, had to use my 401k in 2008 to pay off my brand new car. That was my 1st layoff after 9 awesome years with Harris Corporation, Melbourne, Florida. That started my unpredictible life journey, working wherever I could with no 401k.
๐ฅWE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU๐ฅ
Do you have a homeless story to share? We would luv to hear it!!!

โโ๐โโ WAYS TO HELP people experiencing HOMELESSNESS with their DOGS. โโ๐ญโโโโ๐ญโโโโ๐ญโโ
[1] Donate supplies. You can donate food, water bowls, toys, treats, bedding, leashes, collars, and more to a local pet food pantry or homeless shelter. You can also host a pet food drive at a school, church, or business.
[2] Provide veterinary care. Organizations like The Street Dog Coalition offer free veterinary care and other services to pets of people experiencing homelessness.
[3] Offer a foster home. You can offer to temporarily foster a homeless person's pet while they get help.
[4] Negotiate with pet boarding facilities. You can negotiate a reduced rate or no fee for pet boarding with a local facility and refer people in crisis there.
[5] Pay for vaccinations. You can offer to pay for updated vaccinations so that the pet can be welcome at pet-friendly facilities.
[6] Create a network. You can talk to people in your neighborhood, church, or Rotary Club about offering their homes or yards to a homeless person's pet.

โโโโ๐โโโโ Remember, any of us could be "homeless" due to job loss, medical bills and so on.
WE NEVER think it will happen to us!!!
Lol, I found this out in 2017 age 59 when my job hours were reduced and other businesses were closing. And trust me, NOT alot of Housing Assistance out there for us.

โ๐โ THIS AUTHOR USE TO BE HOMELESS!!!
Kenyon started writing while in high school, in part as therapy to escape other aspects of her life. She went to Georgia College in the 1980s, and there she met her future husband, Lawrence Kenyon. They married in 1990, and they moved to Jackson, Mississippi, while he studied law. Although money was already tight, after their first child was born and he graduated they lost their house, subsequently forcing them to live out of their car until they were able to secure an apartment some months later.
Under the pseudonym Kinley MacGregor she writes historical fiction with paranormal elements. Kenyon's novels have sold over 70 million copies in print in over 100 countries. Under both names, her books have appeared at the top of the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today lists, and they are frequent bestsellers in Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

โ๐โ (Author who use to be homeless)
NOT everyone whoโs homeless is a drug-addict or in need of mental health care.
Some are normal people whoโve been knocked down, and it can happen to you too.
NOT all of us made bad life choices.

@GailL1 , I respect your comment and agree, CONDEMNED PROPERTY is suppose to be recorded. Yes, some can be "seen" to be condemned. The places I mentioned had NO RECORD and didnot look condemned. Thankful I NEVER had this experience but could have like the folks I mentioned.
*** YOU WROTE. It should be pretty apparent just by looking at it - but if not, in my community, one can look up the status of any property on the local tax assessors files by address. It would be flagged as Condemned. Investopedia - Condemnation: Definition in Real Estate, Types, and Examples If something is too good to be true - it probably is -

โ๐ฑโ AN UNUSUAL CAUSE OF HOMELESSNESS!!!
I have never owned a home (and donot want to) but have rented two in Florida.
I didnot know that sometimes LANDLORDS will rent their CONDEMNED PROPERTY to unsuspecting people.
I count my blessings that my Florida Rental Agent (a husband and wife, she rented,he maintenance) for the two houses were HONEST.
While living at the Roanoke Rescue Mission here in Virginia in 2017, I had TEARS in my eyes as I listened to people who ended up homeless because of this DISHONESTY!!!
Sorry, there needs to be a way to find out IF a house (or apartment, condo, townhouse, mobile house) has been CONDEMNED.
And these people LOST their deposits and sometimes their furniture when there was water damage or a roof collapsed.

๐ฆ Another Holiday will be here shortly and with it well-meaning VOLUNTEERS offering the HOMELESS a meal for a day. Yes, this is a meal for ONE DAY and this is needed. What they need is a YEAR-ROUND SOLUTION so they can COOK in a place called HOME.
Just my thoughts from being homeless at age 59 in 2017 in Virginia due to the Economy where I was = job hours were REDUCED. All my savings were gone. Had to take the Amtrak to another Virginia Location where they had a bed for me in a Rescue Mission. The 13 months I stayed there, I saved $5,000.00. Bought a second-hand car for $3,000. Moved into a Studio Apartment with NO HELP from anyone. Never been homeless AGAIN.
Sometimes you have to RELOCATE to get off the streets. My previous location had a WAITING LIST of 3 pages. โ๐ฑโโ๐ฑโโ๐ฑโ My new location had a bed. GRATEFUL to the Roanoke Rescue Mission in Virginia. Please DONATE if you can. THEY CARE about the homeless YEAR ROUND.
Take care,

โโโโโโโ๐ตโโโโโ I use to be a homeless OLD LADY!!!
I was homeless in 2017 at the age of 59 for 13 months.
And NO, I was NOT an addict.
My job hours got cut as other businesses were closing their doors = NO other job to get.
[1] In 2017 I had to relocate to another city in Virginia in order to obtain a bed in a Rescue Mission where I was able to work and save. I used Amtrak.
[2] I bought a second-hand car in 2018 and moved into a place of my own with NO ASSISTANCE from anyone. The $5,000.00 I had saved during my 13 months in the Rescue Mission was all gone by the time I moved out (car stuff,apartment/utilities deposits).
[3] While my life is NOT perfect at the moment, I now have a SAFE place to call home. GRATEFUL!!! โ๐โ
TO ANYONE OUT THERE WHO IS HOMELESS - this โโโโโ๐ธโโโโโ attachment โโโโโ๐ธโโโโโ is for you my friend.

Lol @GailL1 , some discussions with you I really do enjoy and you have given me some good advice. But typical you, got to have the last word sometimes. Whatever. ๐๐คฃ
*** YOU WROTE: Idid not ask if you paid them. It is purely a math question:
Letโs say you have $50K in a 401k. - you take it all out early -
$ 50,000 - $ 7000 (guesstimate taxes).- $ 5000 (early withdrawal penalty) = $ 38,000 usable funds.
That $ 50K turns into $38K - $12K is a lot of money for basically nothing,

TOMORROW is another day to seek a place to call home. NEVER GIVE UP.
BE SAFE my friend(s).

@GailL1 , when you are "laid off" and have to relocate to another job - you do what you need to do. Cashing out my 401k saved me the 1st layoff. You already KNOW about the "penalities and taxes" - so I have NO idea why you felt a need to ask me IF I paid them. Anyway, I do appreciate you stopping by and again as with my interaction with you today in the Medicare Forum = I am also walking away from this. I am sure someone will probably use the IRS link you posted. I am dealing with alot in my REAL life of which I am applying my energy and time to. This is taking up too much of my time and energy. Take care!
*** YOU WROTE: What does it matter ? When a person is needing money for whatever ends to get by especially to stay out of homelessness, cashing in a retirement account early cost money - IOW, with the penalty and taxes that have to be paid, it greatly reduces the amount that they can use for any purpose cause Uncle Sam gets his dues -
Getting money by increasing oneโs debt load - taxes and penalty - just doesnโt seem logical in the financial sense -

@GailL1 , what does this question have to do with anything? Does it matter IF I paid taxes or not. The goal of my sharing which has helped other age 50+ homeless (contacted me via AARP PM for privacy), is to give HOPE. Hope that although we may be OLD, never "give up" and there are ways to get back on your feet.
*** YOU WROTE: If less than 59.5 years old, didnโt that move cost you in taxes (ordinary income taxes) and with an added 10% penalty for early withdrawal?
