Across the country many mom and pop motels and hotels still exist, even though the numbers are falling. They still have the most reasonable rates if you are not seeking luxuries, however many are not accessible online and don't use third party reservation services for obvious reasons. Therefore, if you find a good friendly mom and pop establishment, continue to support them with your business and referrals.
The middle size franchise motel and hotel operations are taking over the extended stay markets, and that is good and bad news. The good news is that they are present in many locations and accesible online for convenient planning. The bad news is they are still too costly in some parts of the country, especially in California, to stay for several months. A very modest room 300 sq ft. could easily average $3000 per month. I have seen rates closer to the more manageable $1000 per month range in more remote areas, thus requiring a car to get anywhere. And there is everything in between. Please share if you have located the right combination of low price and safe convenience in an Extended Stay Establishment.
The larger hotels are the most comfortable, and often the most secure, however they generally don't offer weekly nor monthly discounted rates; moreover they may charge you more for longer stays or even prohibit stays longer than 21 or 28 days. As a single male these places are good for me, however the monthly rates, and the deposits required (at some) for incidental costs make this option out of reach for long extended stays. A long term relationship with approachable management might help, but not likely in large markets where they don't-need-your-discounted-rate-business.
