What is Geoguessr?

Geoguessr is a geography guessing game, where you’re presented with a Google Street View map and it’s your goal to figure out where you are before time runs out.

What is the goal of the game?

In this daily version of Geoguessr, you’ll get the opportunity to pinpoint the location of Google Street View maps. Your goal is to get as close as possible and get as many points as possible!

How often can I play?

Geoguessr is a daily game.

How many rounds are there?

The game has three rounds, meaning you can guess three times. However, there is usually a bonus round which offers a fourth guess, if you watch an ad.

How many points can I get?

Each round has a maximum of 5,000 points, which you get if you’re extremely close to the actual street view. As you get further away, you lose more points. With three rounds and a bonus round, you can get a maximum of 20,000 points.

How do I play?

When each round begins, you’ll be presented with a Google Street View map. You’re allowed to navigate around the map just as though it were a regular Google Maps view. You can use the arrows to move down streets, zoom in and out, and so on. When you are ready to guess, click the world map in the bottom right of the screen. You can then navigate around the map, zoom out or in, and eventually click somewhere to place a pin. Click “Guess” and you’ll see how well you did.

Can I change the placement of my pin after dropping it?

Yes. You can move your pin as much as you want until you click “Guess.”

How much time do I get per round?

Three minutes.

I’ve navigated far away from my start point. How do I get back?

Click the “Return to Start” button that looks like a flag in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Can I place a checkpoint while navigating around?

Yes. Click the “Set Checkpoint” button that looks like a pin with a plus sign in it in the bottom left corner of the screen.

I have no idea where in the world to guess. What are some tips for guessing?

Geoguessr can be a tough game – especially if you find yourself in a nondescript forest or on a long, lonely road. Here are some things to look for to get you closer to the right spot:

1. Languages – are there any signs with a language on it? This can put you somewhere specific in the world – but be careful, as some languages can appear in many places.
2. Road signs – different countries have different-looking signs. You may not know which specific country has the sign you’re looking it, but it could provide a region or general context.
3. Websites – do you see a billboard or another advertisement with a website domain? It might be more specific than .com -- .au is Australia and .br is Brazil, for instance.
4. Environment – Some places have specific types of trees, or mountains, or deserts, or water. Keep an eye out!

What is the point of the compass?

In Geoguessr, you’ll have a compass to tell you which cardinal direction you’re traveling. This is a very useful tool! Feel free to switch the style of compass by clicking the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and toggling it. If you are looking at the traditional compass arrow, you can use that to determine whether you’re in the northern or southern hemisphere.

Center the image’s sun on your screen. If it’s north of you, you’re south of the equator. If it’s south of you, you’re north of the equator. Keep in mind that the compass’ red arrow will always point north!

Can I compare my scores to other players?

Yes. At the end of the game, you’ll see how many points you received, and how it compares to other players. Geoguessr will tell you which percentage of players you did better than.

Are there different modes?

No. This is a streamlined version of the main Geoguessr game featuring a daily challenge.

Can I toggle the volume on and off?

Yes. Click the gear icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and you’ll see sliders for the effect volume and music volume. You can also toggle all sound off below those sliders.
