Save Money at the grocery store

You can save money by purchasing the size of a product which has the lowest cost per unit.  For example which is the better value:  a dozen eggs for $1.97 or 18 eggs for $3.49?  That is an easy one.  What about when a product comes in 3 different sizes?

Which is the best value for this case of shredded cheese?
8 ounces for $1.87
16 ounces for $3.25

32 ounces for $5.99

Price per unit cost is often shown on the shelf label for a product.

The price shown on the label (if you can read it) doesn’t include any discount or coupon available.

I wrote an iPhone app which calculates and compares up to 3 different sizes of a product and determines the best deal.

You can buy it on the Apple Store at:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/unitcostcalculator/id6444051123
Or by searching for UnitCostCalculator.

Thanks.

A new version is available of the iOS app which allows quick comparison between product sizes.

This App can help you save money at the grocery store!

It compares the unit cost for up to 3 different sizes of a product.

The size with the lowest unit cost (best value) is displayed in red.

If you have a coupon for a certain size it is entered in the corresponding coupon field and is applied to the calculation automatically.

If you have no coupons, the coupon field may be left empty.

You can try for free for 90 days on an iPhone using iOS version 15 or newer.

Here is the link to the beta program on the App Store.

Great tips, Jeffrey; thanks for posting.

Also, so everyone knows (if they don't already), all "smart" phones and computers include calculators, so that's a free option.

Also, I compare local ads to AMZ groceries then pick the least expensive option (planning ahead and freezing). Also, years ago I was advised major grocers rotate savings so watch for that (e.g., cheese $2.49 is $1.49 every 4th week).

You can use a calculator to determine the unit cost of one size at a time.  I find it difficult to keep 3 values in my head long enough to figure out which is the best deal.  My App is way faster than using a calculator!  I designed it to be simple to use.
