Don't waste the time or money on the Safe Driver Course if you have AMICA Insiurance.

I have had Amica, one of the best-rated insurers in the business, for many years.  If you have them and value the quality of their coverage, be advised that they do NOT give discounts for the AARP Safe Driver Course completion.  I took the course years ago and found out the hard way.

Call your insurance company FIRST before you get into any course that aims to provide you with a discount credit for taking the course.

I couldn't get an answer on what the savings w/Progressive would be in advance but the internet suggested it would be 10-15%.

So I took the 6 hour online course at a discounted cost of $20.21 in time for my semi-annual renewal.

Turns out the savings was $2 on my 6-month premium. It's supposed to apply for 3-years so my total savings will $12 !!!  Woohoo !

I also spent a great deal of time on the phone & online chat with Progressive and couldn't get anyone that knew whether $2 discount for 6-months was a reasonable or expected amount; only that my information on the policy was accurate so it must be the 'right' discount.

Nationwide gave me a discount and even suggested it.

Amica has partnered with another company which offers a driver safety course for $25 which does get you a discount.

See the Amica website for more info.

You are correct, I recently completed the course - It's a scam run by AARP - Travelers Insurance does not honor the course for a discount - And AARP will not give you a refund.

I took the course 3 years ago and over th course of 3 years it looks like the premium was reduced a total of about $60 or $10 each 6 month.  USAA.  Got a reminder from AARP that my course needs renewal.  Discovered my local public library is offering the 8 hour course for free.  Signed up and took the course last weekend.  Submitted to USAA.  Still waiting on answer.  When I questioned USAA about it prior to learning about the the library course, they were vague about the discount but gave me the figures.  Others in the class mentioned vague discounts.  Mine seems to be about 2%.  Another student said 3%.  Instructor suggested high like $100 but his policy covered several people.  AAA apparently said no discount.  Seems the discount is totally up to the company, not a statewide policy.  Check to see if your local library offers class.  Instructor said it took his prodding with the library to offer it while he offered it to people at Senior Centers, though not sure if that was a free or paid program.

Also if you have taken the course and it is just a renewal you apparently can take a shorter course like 6 hours instead of 8.  Not sure if the fees are the same
