Just got another email asking me to confirm my subscription. Thankfully, preferences still shows no subscriptions. But, why am I still being asked to confirm?

I'm following the instructions in the link you sent. Under Settings > Preferences, there is no tab for Private Messages.I have no way to enable Private Messages.
