Consumer Cellular $55 for 2 - Don't be Fooled!

AARP Link:  ConsumerCellular.com/4346

So I've researched this offer and decided its not for me!  Why?  Because you will be on a very low priority on ATT or Tmobile cell service.  That's how they can offer these cheap cell phone service offers.  The phone service on AT&T may be good in your area, but in times of heavy service you will be downgraded from 5G (if you are even getting that) down to 4G and THEN very slow bandwidth or no service at all.  This of course happens in times of Emergency or local outages in cell towers.  They give priority to their regular subscribers - of course.  Consumer Cellular is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) as described below.  I want my family to have the security of reliable cell service so I'm sticking with Verizon - at least for now.  This is another example of AARP giving seniors a "great offer" without disclosing what you may be giving up and the lower level of service that you wil get.

From U.S. News:

"The company (Consumer Cellular) is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), meaning it leases service from another carrier. In Consumer Cellularโ€™s case, those carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile.

Also, as an MVNO that leases towers from AT&T and T-Mobile, Consumer Cellular customers may not have access to the entire network of those carriers and may experience slower speeds since the carrierโ€™s customers get priority during heavy network usage."

You get what you pay for and

Don't be fooled - ya don't get sumthin' fer nuthin'.

No I did not take the offer and it does not surprise me that with fees and taxes that you are paying $70.  More deception.

I would like to let everyone know some truths and facts about Consumer Cellular as a previous employee.

Consumer Cellular primarily runs on AT&T's network (and in some areas T-Mobile's network). The representatives are hourly employees with commission opportunities, and the sales environment is heavily focused on selling add-ons. Representatives are trained and pressured to sell seniors products such as fall detection devices, smartwatches, accessories, protection plans, and other services.

Some other concerns I want to mention for anyone considering Consumer Cellular or who currently has service: if you ever see a representative's computer while they're assisting you, you'll notice your account includes an internal customer rating or score. Every customer is evaluated using internal metrics.

A lot of representatives are focused on commission, and many can make thousands of dollars through aggressive sales and by heavily pushing additional products and services. While there are many honest employees who genuinely want to help customers, the sales pressure is real.

From my experience, the company places a strong emphasis on sales numbers, performance metrics, and meeting quotas. Representatives are closely measured on their performance, and that pressure often carries over into customer interactions.

If you read employee reviews online, you'll also see recurring complaints about micromanagement, constantly changing performance expectations, heavy sales pressure, high turnover in some locations, and a stronger focus on metrics than customer satisfaction.

I also think it's fair for consumers to ask questions about endorsements. AARP has promoted Consumer Cellular for years, and many seniors trust that recommendation. I believe consumers should do their own research, read customer and employee reviews, understand the phone unlocking policy, and compare other carriers before assuming an endorsement means the experience will be right for them.

My advice to anyone considering Consumer Cellular is simple:

  • Read the phone unlocking policy before purchasing a device.
  • Review every add-on before agreeing to it.
  • Ask for a complete breakdown of your monthly bill.
  • Don't let anyone pressure you into making a decision during the call. Take your time and make sure you understand exactly what you're paying for.

This post reflects my personal experience as a former employee along with concerns that have been raised repeatedly by other employees in publicly available reviews.

i ordered sim card but didn't change carrier for a couple months. Consumer Cellular thinks when you order the sim cards, your service/account is created. when i did get to making the carrier change, THEY WOULD NOT GIVE ME THE 2ND MONTH FREE. add insult to injury, my calls keep getting dropped. i now received my 2nd bill and it's higher than when i was with t-mobile and I have their AARP 2 line plan. CONSUMER CELLULAR CHARGES A $7.98 FEE BECAUSE THEY CAN & THEY WILL NOT WAIVE. i asked about cancelling requirements in order to port my phone #s and they sent the code to cancel and included a stmt about calling to get a possible discount. they offered $7 off per month for 6 months. I took the option as the do not stop billing on the date you cancel, you have to wait until your bill cycles or you pay for service your not receiving. their customer service is just business as usual. they do not go the extra step. I will be cancelling my service with consumer cellular and I will not recommend them to anyone, ever.

I was on the AARP/Consumer Cellular senior plan for $55.00 a month plus taxes/fees (normally comes to $67.27 per month).

I needed to switch to AT&T since consumer cellular does NOT offer a home internet plan. Consumer Cellular then (without warning) removed all discounts and promotions on my final bill which I received today via email (Monday January 12, 2026) I called to inform them that the bill was too high and that my discounts were missing. I should have received these discounts through my last billing cycle as I am a member of AARP through May 2032.

They flat out refused to honor their printed discount plan and restore my discounts for the final billing cycle. This is a form of bait and switch and Consumer cellular deserves to be fined, and my overcharges refunded along with compensation for having to file.

I also recorded the conversation to forward to the Michigan State Attorney General for my complaint.

100% Agree. Don't switch . It's  not worth it.

They're coverage and service is sub par . Stay with your current carrier .

Most carriers will tell you if taxes and fees are included. I am paying $60 and change for 2 lines. I live in suffolk county ny, and the service is horrible. I switched from verizon to save money, this service doesnโ€™t compare. I canโ€™t call from my house to garage, calls fail, people know not to call me during busy hours, lol, itโ€™s called de prioritizing, texting seems to be ok. I have people tell me it says your vm says itโ€™s not set up, yet I get vmโ€s sometimes, and cc canโ€™t figure out why. 3 months later Iโ€™ve switched to boost mobile $25 a mo, unlimited, 30 gb data, fine for us, no activation fees, so far so good, less than $60 a month.  I also have friends using mint mobile, $360 a year, unlimited 50gb, pay in advance tho, they love it. Itโ€™s so easy to switch, I just canโ€™t see paying the big guys for the way I use a phone, texting, streaming music, occasionally surfing the web.

@pbs4arp Did you actually pay $55 a month with the AARP55 promo?  I'm getting charged almost $70 per month for 2 lines with the AARP55 promo.

That's their "bait" tactic. They say 55.00 and upcharge it to about 70 with other fees .

Me too. I'm seeing on my invoice that I'm being charged for the extra line that's supposed to be included. I've called every month and customer service reps are all extremely rude and over talk me.Never explain why. Only one said she figured out that they never put me on the discount plan. That was until I seen my bill which still shows me being charged the extra $15.. It should plainly state Included...

Consumer Cellular is expensive! I've had Mint Mobile for almost 2yrs without any slowdown in service, except when exceeding data allowance, which only happened to my husband once. Runs on the TMobile network. We both have the "unlimited talk and text and 5GB data" plan and it's $15/mo which needs to be paid 3mo in advanced. You need to sign up individually and then form a "family" (2 or more people). This way you can keep the lowest rate of paying for 1yr in advanced, but paying only every 3months. Make sure to set your account for the 3mo payments in your family. It's $50.62 per person per 3mos (5GB), including taxes and fees. They have a special phone help number for the Mint 55+ plan. Whatever you choose, always read the small print carefully. I have a referral code for getting $15 credit if you sign up with it. Only 4 people can use it, but I could get 4 more. Reply if interested.

Good evening. I am interested as well. Do we have to purchase new phones with Mint Mobile in order to transfer our services from Consumer Cellular? Please advise.
