Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder

For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo

And the king of all, Sir Duke

And with a voice like Ella's ringing out

There's no way the band can lose

Joey (Concrete Blonde):

from Songfacts.com:

"This song is about being in love with an alcoholic. Concrete Blonde lead singer Johnette Napolitano wrote it about Marc Moreland of the band Wall Of Voodoo - the bands played many of the same Los Angeles venues in the '80s. Moreland died of liver failure in 2002; Napolitano discussed Moreland and writing the song about him in a concert known as the "D.C. Sessions."

These technically don't count, I guess, but I'm on a roll...

Songs that were written about other musicians but do not literally mention them by name

Graham Nash penned two

Carrie Anne - about Marianne Faithful

Our House - about Joni Mitchell

Leonard Cohen's Chelsea Hotel #2 is a song about Janis Joplin, as is Kris Kristofferson's

Epitaph (Black and Blue), which was his eulogy to Janis

In addition to the Dylan reference, Mr. Jones is the band's bass player, Marty Jones.

The Late, Great Charlie Daniels Ode to Southern Rock

South's Gonna Do It Again

Well, the train to Grinder's Switch is runnin' right on time
And them Tucker Boys are cookin' down in Caroline
People down in Florida can't be still
When ol' Lynyrd Skynrd's pickin' down in Jacksonville
People down in Georgia come from near and far
To hear Richard Betts pickin' on that red guitar
So gather 'round, gather 'round chillin'
Get down, well just get down chillin'
Get loud, well you can be loud and be proud
Well you can be proud, hear now
Be proud you're a rebel
'Cause the South's gonna do it again and again
Elvin Bishop sittin' on a bale of hay
He ain't good lookin', but he sure can play
And there's ZZ Top and you can't forget
That old brother Willie's gettin' soakin' wet
And all the good people down in Tennessee
Are diggin' barefoot Jerry and C.D.B

Last year a French musician called Pone released an album called Kate and Me.  It's a dreamy electronica revisioning of songs by English musician Kate Bush.  But there's something even more unique about the album.  From katebushnews.com:

"Pone, real name Guilhem Gallart, has composed an instrumental beat album, “Kate and Me“, as an ode to Kate Bush – each of the songs contain samples from one or more recordings Kate has made, interwoven with beats and rap vocals. Guilhem lives with motor neurone disease (also known as ALS) and, as he cannot move his body, he uses eye-tracking technology to compose and build his intricate compositions on a computer screen."

Loretta Lynn's Lincoln (Josh Turner):

"It was then I had a vision of Dolly Parton
(Right there, he had a vision of Dolly Parton)
She said, 'ain't that Loretta Lynn's Lincoln?'
Yeah, it's Loretta Lynn's Lincoln
She said, 'I thought I recognized them two headlights blinkin'.
I do declare, that there's Loretta Lynn's Lincoln
Dolly said, 'slide over, J Otis, let me take you downtown
Miss Loretta's waitin' for us at the Orchid Lounge.'
I couldn't believe my ears, I couldn't believe my eyes
Why, she was wavin' from the curb, and we drove by
Well, we turned that big rig around, right on a dime
I ain't seen nothin' like that since Red Solvine (Red Solvine)"
