 Believe it or not, I like Neil Diamond's version of that song better than the Monkees' version.  Neil wrote that song.  Did you know that, with the background music that they did, was done by a group called The Wrecking Crew?  There's a movie documentary about The Wrecking Crew that I saw and it was very interesting.  I'd highly recommend watching that doc/movie.

  The Beach Boy's version of that song is absolutely the best.   There were quite a few other artists who have done that song.   I think it was originally done by Bobby Freeman.  The others that I can think of who have done that song are The Mama's and The Papas, Bette Midler, and many others.
