It’s Criminal!

Many people love reality or fictional crime shows. What songs are about crime? Either committed or thought about. I was surprised when I thought of this just how many there are.

Whisky In The Jar - Thin Lizzy

As I was goin’ over the Cork and Kerry mountains

I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin’

I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier

I said “Stand and deliver, or the devil he may take you”

Later in the story, his lover betrays him, and Captain Farrell comes to arrest him and take him off to prison.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!! ☘️Slainte! 🥃 ☘️

The Black Velvet Band - The Irish Rovers

Well, I went out strolling one evening, not meaning to go very far,
When I met with a frolicksome damsel. She was selling her trade in the bar.
A watch she took from a customer, and slipped it right into my hand.
Then the law came and put me in prison.
Bad luck to her black velvet band!

Her eyes, they shone like the diamonds.
You'd think she was queen of the land,
And her hair hung over her shoulders,
Tied up with a black velvet band.

Next morning, before judge and jury, for trial I had to appear.
And the judge, he said "my young fellow, the case against you is quite clear.
And seven long years is your sentence. You're going to Van Diemen's Land,
Far away from your friends and relations. They follow the black velvet band."

The Great Filling Station Holdup - Jimmy Buffet

I pulled into the regular pump
I was feelin' quite at ease
I rolled down my window and told the man
"Fifty cents worth, please"
Then out jumped my partner
With his trusty pellet gun
He said, "Boy, this is a holdup
Keep pumpin' and don't run."

Robbin’ The Cradle: Tony Bellus (Always struck me as a creepy song. But I suppose it fits the topic: 1) it has Robbin’ in the title and 2) most if not all States criminalize “robbing the cradle”).

La Grange - ZZ Top

It’s about a “house of ill repute” located just outside of La Grange Tx called the Chicken Ranch. It was featured in a movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Dolly Parton played the madam. It really existed, and the law tended to ignore them. It was later sold and turned into a restaurant for a while. Still hate the song!

A Pirate Looks At Forty - Jimmy Buffet

"

Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

I've done a bit of smugglin', and I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last"

...Hope The "P" word doesn't ruffle too many feathers.

Bobb's At Gunpoint - Quincy Jones

It's an instrumental from the soundtrack of a movie and less than a minute long, but "Gunpoint" is in the title, the movie is titled "A Deadly Affair" and it sounds really ominous.
