GREAT COVERS OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS

For many an original song that they love cannot and will not ever be duplicated by a cover, but there are many songs that have been done equally (debatebly) well by others..

So do you have favorites?

What are your favorite covers of favorite songs?

Good song. Good version. I like the Bangles version. But between the two, The Bangles has a tad bit of a shrill voice. This version has a smoother voice and is a tad bit easier on the ears (for quieter times). I still like the Bangles; don't know if I can really pick between the two. Different versions for different moods.

"Sweet Dreams {of You} * Tommy McClain's 1966 rendition of Don Gibson's 1956 tune is a great cover with the keyboards taking lead instead of guitars.

The Beatles had some of the best rock n roll covers of all time. It was so much fun to watch them just break into one on the Get Back movie. I loved watching Paul just shred that piano like nothing to it, baby! My favorite would be this one … Paul on piano and John kills it on vocals.

Question: Does anyone know the English version of this song? It sounds so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.

@dl73698250 - It’s a beautiful song, and it has a familiar sound, but I can’t place it. I looked up the translation which is strong feelings.

There's a song I like that has several covers; A Man Without Love. I'm not sure Who Barry Mason is, or when he wrote this song, but 3 favorite versions of this are by Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, and Florian Haidt (German).

It is a beautiful song. Thanks for those links @dl73698250 and the memories. The German one was very nice. Wonderful voice.

Barry Mason was a singer songwriter. He wrote "Delilah" with Les Reed for Tom Jones and some other songs for others and himself. Like, he wrote "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" with Tony Macaulay.

Mason adapted "A Man Without Love" from an Italian song "Quando m'innamoro" - written by Daniele Pace, Mario Panzeri, Roberto Livraghi.

Guess the timeline was 1968, seems all stems at this date. The first live performance in Italy was by Anna Identici. The English versions have the credits with the Italian writers and Barry's name.

I also like the Sergio Franchi version. He sings it in English and Italian.

Oh, my! Sergio Franchi❣️ I remember seeing him on Ed Sullivan, hanging on to every vibrato, just loved him, and all of 10 yrs old! 😸

MeTV (if you get it) has reruns of Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights. There is a channel on you tube with Sergio's songs. There are a lot of the performances from the Ed Sullivan Show if you want to check them out.

Thanks @Vexed. I’ll check them out on YouTube. A while back, I found a video of him singing Volare. That’s my favorite. Torna ‘a Surriento is another one.

You are welcome. Yes @MaVolta , never get tired of hearing a great voice and song.

That is like Andrea Bocelli's "Con Te Partiro" from 97. He is in his 60's today and still sounds great. But that music and his voice fills my soul when I hear it. When it came out, I raved about it so much, I received 3 cd's of the Romanza album from people at work. 🐱  Still play them from time to time. Wore that song out at first though.  🐱

He sure has a good voice. Good song. Don't wanna get off topic, but I just gotta plug this song: Demis Roussos - Forever And Ever (1973) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig-iQP_0bB8

That was nice. Never heard him before. Searched a bit and found out he was in Aphrodite's Child.

@MaVolta, Englebert did a cover of that song of Demis's "Forever and Ever".

@dl73698250 , not off topic. The topic continues on, we are on a tangent. 🐱

The German lyrics actually mean something else. Das Tu Ich So Gerne Für Dich means "I'd love to do that for you". I don't speak German, but I know bits & pieces.

A beautiful song ...

"I Who Have Nothing"
based on an Italian song "Uno dei Tanti" (in English "One of Many") - written by Carlo Donida and Mogol  -- recorded by Joe Sentieri (61)

Ben E. King -  (63) (First to bring to record in US) Ben heard it in Italy and his producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller translated the lyrics.

There are many covers of King's version, these are my favorites out of the ones I have heard. You may have others.

Terry Knight and the Pack(66) - (They would become Grand Funk Railroad)

Joe Cocker - (04)

Cliff Richard - (08) - (released many years after recording it)

That’s a great song to pick. I didn’t know it was originally Italian. Just for kicks, I looked up the Italian version.
https://youtu.be/bmg9xXLKX38

So here’s my take on them.

Ben E King stayed fairly close to the original, full of drama, and somewhat heavy for a pop song. I like both of them.

I didn’t much care for the Terry Knight version mainly because I’m not a fan of spoken words in songs, but otherwise okay.

Joe Cocker’s gravelly vocals are a good match, too, and it has a nice guitar solo.

Cliff Richard gives the song a more tender feeling of heartache, and the opening acoustic guitar is really a beautiful touch.

But Tom Jones would still be my definitive version. His vocal style is more fluid, which gives it a more romantic feel, and his voice full of passion, which he is so well known for.

The version I remember is Tom Jones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Q4vpE9DAs

Speaking of Tom Jones, he has a song A Man Without Love (written by Barry Mason) that had several covers.... (see next post).

"White Room" - original by Cream (68)

cover --- Apocalyptica - guest vocalist Jacoby Shaddix (from Papa Roach) (2021)

Of course "Cream's" is still the definitive version, but this is impressive. Of course, I like Apocalyptica's music.
