GREAT COVERS OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS

For many an original song that they love cannot and will not ever be duplicated by a cover, but there are many songs that have been done equally (debatebly) well by others..

So do you have favorites?

What are your favorite covers of favorite songs?

I think Will To Power did a very good job with Peter Frampton's song I Love Your Way and 10CC's song I'm Not In Love.

The song is by Leon Russell, and Donny Hathaway covered it. But either way a great pick.

No self respecting Dead Head would be wrong by answering this question with Turn On Your Lovelight.  Originally recorded in 1961 by Bobby “Blue” Bland, the Dead covered it in 1966.  It remains a staple to this day with Dead & Company, and one of my favorite covers.

I'd have to  change it to :"great covers by your favorite artists". As an unabashed & diehard Tom Waits fan,I think  his best covers are :"Sea of Love",John the Revelator"& "Somewhere." but his original music is in a class by itself.- that voice!- a voice only a mother (& people like  me) could love! {Not for the faint of heart!}

Turn the Page - Bob Seger cover by Metallica

When interviewed at his Hall of Fame induction, Seger said that he loved their cover, and especially the drums.

Eva Cassidy performed many remakes of great songs over her short career.  She had perfect pitch and the ability to make any song her own.  One of my favorite remakes by her is "Fields Of Gold," but she did many many others that were great, including:

Great version. The funny thing was that was done with original Motown Funk Brothers/studio musicians. They had to practically beg her to try it. She did a beautiful job!!

River Deep Mountain High - Deep Purple

I love this cover of the Ike and Tina Turner classic by Deep Purple. They were experimenting with classical sounds and mixing it with psychedelic-progressive-metal-leaning-rock. Oh, and it has one heck of a guitar riff from Ritchie Blackmore! The original was a whopping 10 minutes on the album, The Book of Taliesyn, which was their second album release in 1969. Also on this album are covers of The Beatles' We Can Work It Out and Neil Diamond's Kentucky Woman.

How about Deep Purple's cover of "Hush?"  Not many tracks start off with a wolf howl.

Many covers of Bob Dylan's songs deserve mention as being superior to Dylan's originals like the Byrds "Mr Tamborine Man". But of special note is Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along The Watchtower". Hendrix reach his pinnacle with his rendition. I got goosebumps the 1st time I heard it and his great guitar work and I still do. One of rock's best songs!

This might be a little-known song by two artists that seem to be getting forgotten. But, I like it. Museum was written by Donovan, but the Herman's Hermits did a better version of it. I like both artists. I think they're underrated.

Whitney Houston's "I'll Always Love You". Although written and performed by Dolly Patron Ms. Houston's rendition is breath taking.
