we?  Who are your favorite male singers of any
genre?  I'm not talking bands here but solo artists.  Of
course, if they were in a band and also went solo you can still name
them such as Jon Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora both of whom are members
of the group Bon Jovi but have also gone solo.  Here's some of

Here's a favorite of mine.  Known for his soft rock ballads and tenor vocals Michael Bolton. 

He's also a great songwriter.  He wrote "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" for Laura Branigan who took it to #1 on the adult contemporary charts.  He then wrote "I Found Someone" for Laura who had a minor hit with it but Cher resurrected the song and her singing career with it two years later.  Michael went on to co-write more songs for these two singers.  He has also written songs for such artists as Barbara Streisand, Kenny G, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Rogers and Peabo Bryson.

  I am a ::huge:: Zappa fan!  Those Mothers were great!  Their album, "Freak Out!" is one of my favorite things in the world.  I rocked my babies to sleep to two songs that made my mom crazy - -   "Wowie, Zowie" and Arlos Guthrie's "I Don't Want a Pickle."  My kids all grew up singing those two and  "Alice's Restaurant" as well.  Arlo was great.

Yes, Frank was great.  His son Dweezil just played the other day at our 11 day music festival called Summerfest.  He's calling his tour Zappa plays Zappa.  He got a great review in our local Milwaukee Journal.  I got to see Arlo at the University Wisconsin Milwaukee campus.  What a great concert that was.  I love the pickle song and I love the song Alice's Restaurant and the movie too.

"The Young and the Restless" playing the part of a
minister in Las Vegas who marries Gloria & Jeff.  It was
hilarious.  Of course, he is an ordained minister.

Well, since I put
one of his record covers on the other topic I must mention one of my
hubby's favorite male singers here.  The late "Frank
Zappa".  I never knew his music until I met my hubby and I
couldn't help but laugh at songs like "Dinah Moe Humm, Suzy
Cream Cheese, Don't You Eat That Yellow Snow, Camarillo Brillo and
of course, Disco Boy.  And then there was the movie "200
Motels" a real classic.

 Not 'technically' a singer but does anybody remember Rod McKuen---a poet popular in the 1960's who sometimes put his words to music? Or am I just old:>). 

  If you are old,
then, so am I.  I have seen Rod McKuen in concert and loved
it.  I have some of his LP's, still, and all of his books of poetry.

My favorite line of his
is from a poem in "Listen to the Warm" :  
"..and so I hurry home to you
to use your belly as a cape to cover up the
day."  I love that!

Also, I don't think Steve Tyrrell
has been mentioned here.  What a guy.  He has such a
raspy, soft voice, and he does standards.  He kind of
brings romance back to music, and makes you want to dance up
close.  ::sigh!::

my choice from the world of blues.   After seeing
Eric Burdon last night he reminded me of the following great blues singer:

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917
– June 21, 2001)
was an influential Americanpost-warblues
singer, guitarist, and songwriter born in Coahoma County near Clarksdale, Mississippi. From a musical family, he was a
cousin of Earl Hooker. John was also influenced by
his stepfather, a local blues guitarist, who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues
that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time.
John developed a half-spoken style that was
his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music
was rhythmically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his
own unique genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving

Yes, he was definitely a cutie.  I too enjoyed the Ozzie and Harriet show.  He is the only artist in history to have a number one song, tv show and movie all in the same week.  His sons Matthew & Gunnar who are triple platinum recording artists now tour with Ricky's band (The Stone Canyon Band) doing a tribute to their father.  Don't they look like their dad?

"Travelin' Man" was a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song in late-May 1961 by Ricky Nelson. It was written by songwriter Jerry Fuller.The short film made to promote the single has been claimed as the first music video.

I loved the TV show too.

genre?  I'm not talking bands here but solo artists.  Of
course, if they were in a band and also went solo you can still name
them such as Jon Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora both of whom are members
of the group Bon Jovi but have also gone solo.  Here's some of

Not anymore since you mentioned him.  I also thought of another great singer who at one time had his music banned from the radio and that's "Cat Stevens" who now goes by the name Yusef Islam.  I always thought he looked like a Greek God.  He still sounds great.

  Before I became a lyricist it was the "beat" and the "chorus/hook" that I really paid attention to.  Now, I also listen to the words and the message in the song and now I can appreciate the "entire" song.

I think I listen to the words and message more now than I did back then.  I use to always know the words but the beat was more what appealed to me.  I use to buy song magazines like "Hit Parade" and "Song Hits" so that I could learn the words but it was the beat that moved me.

You ask "doesn't the music (sound) trump or hook our senses more than the lyrics in general" and I think you are probably right.  I remember when watching American Bandstand as a teen and they would rate a record.  Dick Clark would always ask what they liked about it and they almost always said, "it had a good beat and you could dance to it".  They never said I liked the lyrics.  It would seem to me that the writing of the music is the hardest part.
