FAVORITE MALE SINGERS OF ANY GENRE

Well, we can't leave the guys out can
we?  Who are your favorite male singers of any
genre?  I'm not talking bands here but solo artists.  Of
course, if they were in a band and also went solo you can still name
them such as Jon Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora both of whom are members
of the group Bon Jovi but have also gone solo.  Here's some of
mine from times past to the present:

Frank Sinatra,
Perry Como, Dean Martin, Brook Benton, Jerry Butler, Conway Twitty,
Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Johnny Tillotson, Donovan,
Eddie Cochran, Gene McDaniels, Glen Yarborough, Neil Young, Bob
Dylan, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Eric Clapton, and so many more.

You may also name
your favorite male singer from a band but not the band itself.
For instance, we all know that Diane loves the band Aerosmith
but she would say Steven Tyler.

Funny you should
mention "Little Richard" since he was just on
"The Young and the Restless" playing the part of a
minister in Las Vegas who marries Gloria & Jeff.  It was
hilarious.  Of course, he is an ordained minister.

Well, since I put
one of his record covers on the other topic I must mention one of my
hubby's favorite male singers here.  The late "Frank
Zappa".  I never knew his music until I met my hubby and I
couldn't help but laugh at songs like "Dinah Moe Humm, Suzy
Cream Cheese, Don't You Eat That Yellow Snow, Camarillo Brillo and
of course, Disco Boy.  And then there was the movie "200
Motels" a real classic.

I am a ::huge:: Zappa fan!  Those Mothers were great!  Their album, "Freak Out!" is one of my favorite things in the world.  I rocked my babies to sleep to two songs that made my mom crazy - -   "Wowie, Zowie" and Arlos Guthrie's "I Don't Want a Pickle."  My kids all grew up singing those two and  "Alice's Restaurant" as well.  Arlo was great.

Not 'technically' a singer but does anybody remember Rod McKuen---a poet popular in the 1960's who sometimes put his words to music? Or am I just old:>).

  If you are old,
then, so am I.  I have seen Rod McKuen in concert and loved
it.  I have some of his LP's, still, and all of his books of poetry.

My favorite line of his
is from a poem in "Listen to the Warm" :
"..and so I hurry home to you
to use your belly as a cape to cover up the
day."  I love that!

Also, I don't think Steve Tyrrell
has been mentioned here.  What a guy.  He has such a
raspy, soft voice, and he does standards.  He kind of
brings romance back to music, and makes you want to dance up
close.  ::sigh!::

  Hi all

Today's add to this catagory
is from  the legends of soul.  Like so many, he was
lost much too early

Otis Redding

Induction Year: 1989

Induction Category: Performer

Though his career was relatively
brief, cut short by a tragic plane crash, Otis Redding was a
singer of such commanding stature that to this day he embodies the
essence of soul music in its purist form. His name is synonymous
with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience
in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm &
blues into a form of funky, secular testifying. Redding left
behind a legacy of recordings made during the four-year period
from his first sessions for Stax/Volt Records in 1963 until his
death in 1967. Ironically, although he consistently impacted the
R&B charts beginning with the Top Ten appearance of “Mr.
Pitiful” in 1965, none of his singles fared better than #21
on the pop Top Forty until the posthumous release of
“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” That
landmark song, recorded just four days before Redding’s
death, went to #1 and stayed there for four weeks in early 1968.
It marked a new direction for the singer toward a soul-folk-pop
synthesis that drew from such influences as

www.rockhall.com/inductee/bob-dylan">Bob Dylan

and the new breed of performers
at the Monterey International Pop Festival, at which Redding had
performed.

Redding’s relatively
unspectacular showing on the pop charts at a time when he was
laying down some of the most titanic soul ever recorded - classics
like “Respect” (a song he wrote, later covered by

www.rockhall.com/inductee/aretha-franklin">Aretha Franklin

), “Try a Little
Tenderness” and his terse, funky deconstruction of the
Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction” - may mean that
he was too intensely soulful for the mainstream market at that
time. He was, in many ways, larger than life. Redding, a proudly
self-professed country boy from Macon, Georgia, had it all: a big,
gravely voice, an enormous natural talent for songwriting and
arranging, and a hard-working nature and generous disposition. As
a singer, he styled himself after

www.rockhall.com/inductee/little-richard">Little Richard

(a fellow Macon native) and
www.rockhall.com/inductee/sam-cooke">Sam Cooke

in the early days, but he
gradually
acquired his own voice, imparting gruff,
syncopated inflections to ballad and uptempo material.

Redding has his only Number One hit, “Sittin’ On the
Dock of the Bay,” after his death December 10, 1967 in a plane crash.

Great choice
Diane.  Love Otis.  I’m going to counter with
my choice from the world of blues.   After seeing
Eric Burdon last night he reminded me of the following great blues singer:

JOHN LEE HOOKER

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917
June 21, 2001)
was an influential Americanpost-warblues
singer, guitarist, and songwriter born in Coahoma County near Clarksdale, Mississippi. From a musical family, he was a
cousin of Earl Hooker. John was also influenced by
his stepfather, a local blues guitarist, who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues
that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time.
John developed a half-spoken style that was
his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music
was rhythmically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his
own unique genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving
rhythm into his masterful and idiosyncratic blues guitar and
singing. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen" (1948) and
"Boom Boom" (1962).

Yes, he was definitely a cutie.  I too enjoyed the Ozzie and Harriet show.  He is the only artist in history to have a number one song, tv show and movie all in the same week.  His sons Matthew & Gunnar who are triple platinum recording artists now tour with Ricky's band (The Stone Canyon Band) doing a tribute to their father.  Don't they look like their dad?

  Hey

From back in my early teen years;  Ricky Nelson!!!   Boy was he cute!!!

"Travelin' Man" was a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song in late-May 1961 by Ricky Nelson. It was written by songwriter Jerry Fuller. The short film made to promote the single has been claimed as the first music video.

I loved the TV show too.

Why was he banned?  How did I miss that : )

Diane

It was because he changed his name to Yusuf Islam and started following the teachings of the Quran'.  Some radio stations wouldn't play his music and there were record burnings in some areas.

In Response to FAVORITE MALE SINGERS OF ANY GENRE
:

Not anymore since you mentioned him.  I also thought of another great singer who at one time had his music banned from the radio and that's "Cat Stevens" who now goes by the name Yusef Islam.  I always thought he looked like a Greek God.  He still sounds great.

Before I became a lyricist it was the "beat" and the "chorus/hook" that I really paid attention to.  Now, I also listen to the words and the message in the song and now I can appreciate the "entire" song.

Pat

I think I listen to the words and message more now than I did back then.  I use to always know the words but the beat was more what appealed to me.  I use to buy song magazines like "Hit Parade" and "Song Hits" so that I could learn the words but it was the beat that moved me.

Hi Jim,

You ask "doesn't the music (sound) trump or hook our senses more than the lyrics in general" and I think you are probably right.  I remember when watching American Bandstand as a teen and they would rate a record.  Dick Clark would always ask what they liked about it and they almost always said, "it had a good beat and you could dance to it".  They never said I liked the lyrics.  It would seem to me that the writing of the music is the hardest part.

Hey Pat,

If you can't think of any more I'm sure the rest of us will come up with them or trigger your memory.  How about:

Charlie Pride, Glen Campbell, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and Clint Black to name a few good country artists.

  Hello!

Yes, I think so too; I have read a ton of comments here that folks loved the music even if they only can remember five lyrics, usually "the hook." And you hit the nail on the head too! As the last old-fashioned romantic I understand that ALL WOMEN LOVE TO DANCE! Those who say "no" are just lying through their teeth! LMAO! JIM

Hi Jim,

You are so right.  We love to dance and if it has a good beat you can't help but get off your seat.

Not 'technically' a singer but does anybody remember Rod McKuen---a poet popular in the 1960's who sometimes put his words to music? Or am I just old:>).

No you are not too old.  I remember Rod McKuen as well.  Loved his poetry.
