AARP Travel Center $100 Hotel Coupon - what's the catch?

I picked up this award but am having a very difficult time using it.  I've read the T&C several times and cannot get a single hotel reservation using the expedia-aarp.com link to accept it on the checkout page.

I only get "Sorry, your coupon cannot be applied to this booking. Please check the Terms & Conditions."

Is there a special trick?

Another trick to effectively using this coupon is to compare the AARP/Expedia price to other travel sites before booking to see if you are actually saving money.  I am currently looking at a 1-night stay that the AARP/Expedia site is quoting at $177 all-in (minus $100).  A quick look at Priceline shows the same room for $107 all-in, meaning that I am only saving $30 if I use it.

I will reply to my own post in case this helps others.  I had been entering it as soon as I got to the checkout page.  In order for it to work, you have to fill out the rest of the reservation info (AARP number, name, address, etc) and then the discount code deducts the $100.
