FACT OF THE DAY

Colonial Americans fed lobster to prisoners because it was so cheap

Lobster is one of those things you buy at fancy restaurants where waiters bring you baskets of artisanal bread and call you things like “Sir” and “Madam”. However, that was not always the case. In the colonial era of the United States of America, lobster was so abundant, easy to find, and cheap that it was simply cooked up and served to prisoners as their jail food. No word on if they got hot butter to dip it in, but we would bet against it.

FACT OF THE DAY

Connecticut

This state is for suckers. No, really — the lollipop was first invented in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1908 by George Smith, who enjoyed going to the races so much that he named his creation after a competitor of the time, a horse named Lolly Pop.

FACT OF THE DAY

Colorado

You've got the Rocky Mountain State to thank for your cookout favorite — the cheeseburger. Drive-in owner Louis E. Ballast trademarked the "cheeseburger" on March 5, 1935. He never formally enforced his trademark, and the Humpty Dumpty Barrel restaurant, where the cheeseburger was created, no longer stands, but you can find a stone carving on the side of the road that designates the site of its birth.

Summer @ 10:58 this AM, have yet to turn on my AC, or wear a pair of shorts this season.

Now come to think of it (counting yesterday & today) only have hit 80 degrees 3 days this season.

Yes, though I wouldn't say rainy, otherwise we just got out of 3 weeks without measurable precipitation (close to the record of 26 days)... Spring of '83 was like that, after a beautifully warm winter, more snow in the month of April than the entire winter, & didn't warm up till sometime in June.

Did cycle the AC today... works!

Its always reassuring somehow when we snap something on after a long winter and it WORKS. One less thing.

California

Rolling pastures and bright skies make for happy cows. The Golden State is the United States' #1 dairy producer, churning out tons of butter, milk, and, of course, ice cream each year. Better yet: 99% of California dairy farms are family-owned!

Wisconsin is #1 in cheese production!  Just saying!

Arkansas

Prefer your veggies on the crispy side? The first fried dill pickle ever sold was at the Duchess Drive-In in Atkins, Arkansas, in 1963. If you're looking to try the original, you can get your fix at the Atkins Picklefest each May.

FACT OF THE DAY

Alaska

This chilly state is more than frost and snow. Berries can often be foraged out in the nature, and wild Alaskan blueberries are more nutritious than common blueberries.

FACT OF THE DAY

The official nut of Alabama is the pecan, which explains the popularity of comforting pecan pie in this southern state. It hosts a pecan festival every fall with country music, carnival rides, and a western show.

Fact of the day

Arizona

Yuma County, Arizona, is the nation's winter lettuce capital, thanks to its recognition as the "sunniest place on earth." This county provides America with 90% of its leafy greens from November through March and hosts its own veggie festival called "City of Yuma's Lettuce Festival" every year.

I'm from Maine and I detest lobster. Very hard to eat and way over priced. I'm probably going to lose my "native mainer card" if this gets out.

Your secrets' safe with me. I remember when I lived in Dover Fox Croft, ME, my Grampy brought home live lobster, have all of us gather 'round to listen to the lobsters 'screaming' when they hit the boiling water. I was very upset by it. To this day I am haunted. Sure, I've eaten lobster, blue crab, etc...later in life. I, too, thought it was overrated, messy, and of little-next to nothing nutritional value. Just murder. Hey! Why not let them have their watery adventures, and live a happy life.

We live, we learn. 😉

I often think of the first guy ever in the history of human kind to eat one of those things. Not the most appetizing looking creature out there. I guess he must have been REALLY hungry.

I do wonder how these things happen/come to be. Reminds me of when Tom Hanks in 'Cast Away' captures a crab, breaks it open, uncooked, and all of that 'liquid' came rushing out. Poor crab. The trial and error there. Eventually, he made fire, he cooked crab, and all was right with the world. 'He did it to survive.' lol

Lobsters are also called, 'Bottom Feeders.' They eat the muck on the floor. Yummo! 😉
