AARP Hearing Center
I am trying to read the AARP Magazine in my browser (Chrome) and I would like to page through it using my keyboard but, as far as I can tell, no keyboard shortcuts are provided. I tried it all the obvious ones such as the arrow keys.
You might say "Just use the mouse." But the mouse navigation is annoying because the less-than and greater-than symbols (see example photo below) in the lower-right hand corner jump around on some pages which means I have to move my mouse a bit each time before clicking. It is as if I'm playing a video game and the website is intentionally challenging me to retarget for each page. Sigh.
I called AARP and the representative couldn't even verify the issue ("Sorry but we're not permitted to view our own website while we help customers"). Sigh. I've never seen an online magazine that didn't support keyboard navigation. Am I missing something?
Hi, @DonL139215! I understand it would be easier to use a keyboard shortcut to change pages when reading your AARP Publications online. However, we don't currently have the ability to change the page any other way than clicking the arrow buttons. If you have a mobile device, you can read your AARP Publications through our mobile app, which allows you to swipe left and right to change pages. We do hear you, and I am taking note of your suggestion and comments. Thanks so much for reaching out and for being a valued AARP Member! - Christy C.
Thanks for the suggestion but it doesn't make sense to read a magazine-size page on a mobile-size device. On the other hand, I have a trackpad on my computer but it appears that you have disabled the option on your apps to let them run on desktops. (Specifically, I'm on a Mac which can use iPhone and iPad apps IF the developers check the box to allow it.)
By the way, the Contact Us page has a "Share your screen for help" option but the AARP agent who took my call said she had never heard of it and couldn't use it. Are the agents simply untrained on this or is it something that should be removed until it actually works? See screenshot below.
@DonL139215 I will certainly pass along your feedback regarding other options for navigating the AARP Publications online. As far as the option to share your screen, I'm sorry to hear the agent you spoke with was unfamiliar with that feature. It is a functioning feature that we often use to help in troubleshooting and guidance on our website. Please feel free to reach out to us via chat on our website should you need to share your screen with us, or call our web help team at 1-866-839-0463, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. ET. - Christy C.
