AARP Foundation Experience Corps celebrates an anniversary.
By Elise Ceyral, AARP. Published April 29, 2025.
Laurie Bowers, 73, owes a lot to being a good reader. โNot everyone needs a college degree, but everyone needs to be able to read, write and communicate,โ Bowers says. A former report technician for the police department, Bowers has been teaching reading to students in Buffalo, New York, for six years as a volunteer with AARP Foundation Experience Corps.
Launched in 1995, the program pairs elementary school students with older adults with one goal: improve the kidsโ reading skills before the end of third grade.

I take my hat off to people who take their time to teach others. If you have anyone that is pregnant try to get them to read to the child before it is born. Our son did this, why we will never know. I think it was because they didn't have a good tv service, anyway, it worked. Our grandson loved to read, I joined a children book club after he was born. My wife has taken many pictures of him in my lap with a stack of books. He knew more of the words than I did, lots of times he would have to tell me the dinosaur's name. I think he was in the 5th grade when he took 1st place for the entire school in a speaking contest.
Great way to bond with your child before birth.
