How to Manage Sibling Relationships Strained by Family Caregiving.

Experts say the key to handling family discord is for parents to make caregiving wishes and expectations known early.

By Christine A. Di Pasquale, AARP. Published November 25, 2024.

Sarah Ferguson* had a close relationship with her only sister until their motherโ€™s health declined and her sister became involved with a man who seemed more interested in their motherโ€™s money than in her well-being.

โ€œIt just got very ugly when he was in the picture and he was trying to, I think, keep [my sister] away from me and my family,โ€ explains Ferguson, 59.

Caregiving is hard enough without that kind of intrusion. We need family while we are caring for our loved ones.My sibling thought and accused me of hastening my parents' death with the medications I had to administer. We had been very close before. It was very hurtful and I wasn't able to settle it until both of our parents passed.I was the caregiver for both of them. They passed within 3 months of one another after a very long marriage. It was only then that I was able to inform my sibling in clear terms that the necesary meds made it more dignified and less painful for the first parent we lost.It still hurts that my sibling could think such a thing.God Bless you for taking care of your mom.
