There are plenty of strategies to lower your tax bill, including contributing to retirement accounts, leveraging tax credits and maximizing itemized deductions. Or, if youโ€™re really committed to paying less in taxes, you could move.
 
In nine states, income isnโ€™t taxed โ€” allowing residents to hold onto more of their hard-earned dollars. For retirees, this means that pension payouts, retirement account withdrawals and Social Security benefits arenโ€™t subject to state taxes.

If a state doesn't have an income tax, you'll still end up paying via property taxes, sales taxes or both. I know people who moved to states with no income tax and wound up paying even more due to high property and sales taxes.
