Beware Expedia travel & hotel points

We used AARP Travel with Expedia for a 13 night trip to San Francisco. We stayed at the Holiday Inn on Van Ness. I hadn't actually paid enough attention to the fact that the booking was handled by Expedia until I had completed the booking. I believe I could have booked directly with the hotel and received the same rates or less. My issue is that Holiday Inn will not give you your points because of booking via Expedia. Since Holiday Inn gives 10 points for every dollar spent we are out 33k points! We only ended up with points from the trip because we stayed at a Holiday Inn In KC the day our reservation ended so they gave us 1000 points for overlapping stay!
