I'll try to get this topic started with these song titles about DISTANCES/TRAVELING ...........
*Travelin' Man Ricky Nelson which made it to #1 in 1961
*I Ran (So Far Away) Flock of Seagulls
For a different approach, songs about DISTANCES/TRAVELING...........
*Walk Away Renee' The Left Banke
*Ferry Across The Mersey Gerry & The Pacemakers
Uh, I am sorry if I led off with songs which you may have wanted to post here. How about this....wait a while and then post it....or post it now ! You see, repetition is OKAY ![]()
Please understand, there's lots of freedom and latitude with this topic. Be creative....let's have plenty of laughs and plenty of wows like: "Wow, I wish I had thought of that one!!" "Wow, that's a good one!!
Rusted Root Send Me On My Way (really fun video)
@rc8149 - Side note: "Never Goin' Back" (actually sung by Joe Butler) was written by one of my favorite songwriters: John Stewart - member of the Kingston Trio and a prolific artist. Amazing body of work - he also wrote "Daydream Believer" for the Monkees. May he rest in peace.
We used to sing this one in school back in the day:
"A capital ship for an ocean trip was the Walloping Window-blind,
No gale that blew dismayed her crew or troubled the captain's mind..."
You'll Never Walk Alone - Rogers & Hammerstein 1945
Red-Eye Express John Sebastian of Lovin' Spoonful fame & a great solo career.

I just found another one while checking this out.
John Sebastian - (I'll Paint) Rainbows All Over Your Blues
It's great.

Oh yeh, I agree. Are you familiar with "Younger Generation"? Tender, humorous and insightful.
I wish I had a tie-dyed denim jacket like he wore at Woodstock :-)
His songs were very mellow usually, like "Magical Connection", "How Have You Been" and "She's A Lady". Yes, I miss John Sebastian too, but I have his musical legacy in my collection.
A little more on John Sebastian and The Lovin' Spoonful....
Do you believe in magic--( I do, But my imagination gets in the way)
Did you ever have to make up your mind.. (everday occurance)
And who don't remember Mr. Kotter, Mr.Kotter------ Welcome back
Again, these are what memories are made off.....

That was a good one. I miss him & the Lovin Spoonful.
"On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson is one of my favorite hits!
MOVIN ON BAD COMPANY
"Get up in the morning and it's just another day
Pack up my belongings I got to get away
Jump into a taxi and the time is getting tight
I got to keep a moving I got a show tonight"
Rascals; A Place In The Sun
(Movin' on. Like a branch on a tree, I keep reaching to be free....Movin' on, movin' on.)
"Gotta Travel On" - Billy Grammer (and a host of others)
"Traveling Minstrel Man" - Bobby Bare
"When I Stop Leaving, I'll be Gone" - Charley Pride
"Think I Feel a Hitchhike Coming On" - Ray Whitley
"Roll, Truck, Roll" - Red Simpson
"East Bound and Down" - Jerry Reed
"Ride the Train" - Alabama
"Sweet Melinda" - John Denver
"I've Been Everywhere" - Hank Snow
All have special meaning to me. Not only as traveling songs, but as songs I sang when I called square dances.
"Jamaica Farewell", written by Lord Burgess and sung most memorably by Harry Belafonte.
"Down the way where the nights are gay
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top,
I took a trip on a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop..."
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins
I Can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar
If we want to get into the REALLY old oldies, how about "Come, Josephine, in My Flying Machine" and "In My Merry Oldsmobile"? (Ah, the good old days of "Sing Along with Mitch"...) By the way, "Merry Oldsmobile" got an update when the Olds 442 first came out.
"Leaving On a Jet Plane"; "Yellow Brick Road"; "Chicago, Chicago"; "Oklahoma"; "Bali Hai"
"On the Way to Cape May" - recorded by Al Alberts, is a great song about traveling to the New Jersey shore. Still very popular in PA and NJ.
Oakland, We're For You - The Good Time Washboard 3.
"I Love Paris"; "My Kind of Town (Chicago Is)"; "California Dreaming"; "Kansas City"; "New York, New York"
Another oldie-but-goodie, this one sung by Doris Day: "The Deadwood Stage". Don't remember it? She sang it in her film "Calamity Jane", and on my 78 (!) the flip side is "Secret Love"!
@rp13943674: I would be curious as to which was the "A" side of the single (Deadwood Stage / Secret Love by Doris Day). Secret Love is the better known of the two songs.
Not sure--I suspect my copy was originally part of a soundtrack set (can't get at it right now to check; we're doing some remodeling, and my 78s are in storage out of harm's way!) But I'd think "Secret Love" was probably what we'd call the "A" side, since it was by far the more popular of the two. But I may be wrong; after all, Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" was the "B" side of "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" (??!?!)
@rp13943674: Careful - you may start a new thread: "But the Flip Side was Supposed to be the Hit!" Blessings to you.
"On the Road Again" sung by Willie Nelson
"Midnight Train to Georgia"; "Going up the Country", "Rocky Mountain High", "I Left My Heart in San Francisco";
"Hit the Road Jack and don't ya come back no more no more no more no more."
"Fly Me To The Moon!"
I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane Sung by Peter, Paul & Mary ... written by John Denver. Submitted by Melinda Roberts
