Yep, it's grey! Apparently another word for gloom.
Seal never disclosed the meaning of the song (according to Songfacts), only to say that it was about a relationship. I guess he wanted to leave it open to interpretation. But the more I read it, he may have been comparing a love for someone to love of a drug, as in being addicted, perhaps to both. Who knows? But the drug references are prevalent throughout the song.

I just posted this song in another topic, but it reminded me of the misheard lyrics . . .
Kiss From a Rose - Seal
Song lyrics:
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
I heard:
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave
Always thought the song was about drugs (ref to snow), so "grave" seemed appropriate enough.

LOL! That was a good one. Even John Fogerty admitted he'd sing the line that way just for fun.

I never could get the lyrics to several lines in this song -
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Michael had that unique inflection he'd put on some of the lyrics, and with the sycopated time, there were parts I never figured out. Once I read the lyrics, the best line was -
The kid is not my son
But I heard -
The chances that I won

Misheard Sting
"Englishman in New York"
I'm an idiot. I'm a legal idiot
Real
I'm an alien. I'm a legal alien
"All This Time"
Und warum?
Und warum, warum?
Und warum?
Real
One by one
One by one, by one
One by one.
'Und warum?' is German for 'And why?'
"Be Still My Heart"
I've been to evry single Bogart movie

I went for a good number of years thinking that was REVEREND BLUE JEANS!
Also, The Moody Blues' NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN -
for a long while I had in my mind that it was KNIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN & actually envisioned a knight in armor, sitting upon his steed, whenever I heard that song mentioned or heard the song itself!

Remember Elvis' "Return to Sender, address unknown"?? My sis & I thought it was: "Return to Cinder, address a note."

There are so many of these! that was a good one.
One of mine was;
Manfred Man's Blinded By the Light
Wrapped up like a douche
Another rumour in the night
is: revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night

Thanks for resurfacing this thread from several years ago. I had not read it, but very interesting topic. Perhaps we can add more titles now. I agree with the choice Blinded by the Light as being the most misinterpreted lyrics ever!
Elton John songs often throw me for a loop. Never could get this one - - -

Many, many years ago on the way to work I heard the "new" Beatles song on the radio as "Hey June". I called my husband as soon as I got to work to tell him how thrilled I was that the Beatles had written a song with my name in it (obviously June). What a total disappointment when I found out about 2 days later that the song was "Hey Jude". But, I loved the song then and still do so all is good. (and good grounding for the ego too):)
