FAVORITE MALE SINGERS OF ANY GENRE
Well, we can't leave the guys out can
we? Who are your favorite male singers of any
genre? I'm not talking bands here but solo artists. Of
course, if they were in a band and also went solo you can still name
them such as Jon Bon Jovi or Richie Sambora both of whom are members
of the group Bon Jovi but have also gone solo. Here's some of
mine from times past to the present:
Frank Sinatra,
Perry Como, Dean Martin, Brook Benton, Jerry Butler, Conway Twitty,
Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, Johnny Tillotson, Donovan,
Eddie Cochran, Gene McDaniels, Glen Yarborough, Neil Young, Bob
Dylan, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp, Eric Clapton, and so many more.
You may also name
your favorite male singer from a band but not the band itself.
For instance, we all know that Diane loves the band Aerosmith
but she would say Steven Tyler.

Hi
Right. As
CatwomanDiane said in one of her posts, I like the diversity
of talking to people with different opinions and
knowledge. I mean I am an Aero lover but when you go
the fan club sites there isn't too much conversation, mostly
admiration : ) and drooling too hah
Also I learn about
artists and music that I would not have heard or talked about
otherwise. Boy, we rock LOL
Diane
Hi D.,
You are so right
about learning about artists & music that you wouldn't have
heard about otherwise. Another thing it does is makes you
want to listen to someone you never gave a chance like me
getting out one of my hubby's Steely Dan CD's. Since music
tastes can change with the years I may like them now. We'll
see. He turned me on to Elvis Costello so you never know.

Hi Diane,
You are so
right. There are a few songs by Black Sabbath that I like and
the same goes for groups like AC/DC, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue and
some others but not everything they do. Then there are groups
like Bon Jovi where I love everything they do even some of the songs
that weren't exactly their best. I do appreciate the tastes
and choices of others and that's what makes this group so great the
sharing of our tastes makes for great discussion.

One of the
greatest male artists not previously mentioned is New Orleans great
Antoine "Fats" Domino. He gave us many great songs
including "Blueberry Hill" which Richie Cunningham always
sang the 1st line from on "Happy Days" and my favorite
"I Want To Walk You Home". His home in New
Orleans was severely damaged during hurricane
Katrina. A foundation has been formed and there is hope that
it will be restored and he can return there
someday. He is now 80 years old.

Hi J
Those are two great
adds! I love that "swamp rock
sound" as you say.
I think that is one of
the greatest things about music; the diversity of sound and style
and artists but the common threads of feeling and emotion that
give a common link to all these different artists and their
work. There are lots of artists that you may appreciate for
only some of their work and others who you love for all of their
work.... but whatever the case may be there is room for it
all!!! and we all appreciate each others tastes and
choices. Ain't it great : )

To each his own. I've never
been an Ozzy or Black Sabbath fan but then I've never been much into
metal. I do have a few favorite songs by some so called
"metal" groups but don't care for a steady diet.
Don't know that

list. Seen him in concert twice and I wasn't disappointed
either time. Even got to see him play basketball before the
show. Second concert was a double bill with John Fogerty

Thinking about
Steely Dan made me think about one of the founding members of
that group and a excellent musician and singer in his own right,
Doanld Fagen
To me he will always be the Quintessential New
York club musician although he was born in New Jersey and went to
school in upstate New York.
His work with Steely Dan
is well known but his solo work was excellent, my favorite being
The Nightfly with great singles; "Ruby Baby" ,
"Maxine" and the rest. He also toured with The New
York Rock and Soul Review. The live recorded CD is
trememendous and includes Phoebe Snow, Michael McDonald, Michael
and David Brigati, Boz Skaggs, Donald Fagen and
others. Diane
During the eighties,
Fagen composed music for films and various other artists and
toured with the
New York Rock and Soul Revue
. His second solo album,
1993's
Kamakiriad
, was produced by
Becker. This led to their reunion as a writing team and the
creation of a new touring version of Steely Dan. The following
year Fagen co-produced Becker's solo debut,
11 Tracks of Whack
.
The duo have kept Steely
Dan going strong in its new formation and have since delighted
their legion of fans with two more Steely Dan albums, the Grammy
Award winning
Two Against Nature
(2000) and
Everything Must Go
(2003), as well as the
live CD
Alive in America
(1995) and a live
concert
DVD
.
Recording sessions for
Fagen's third solo album,
Morph the Cat
, began in August 2004
and the album was released March 14th, 2006. Performing on the
album are
Wayne Krantz
(guitar),
Jon Herington
(guitar),
Keith Carlock
(drums),
Freddy Washington
(bass),
Ted Baker
(piano), and
Walt Weiskopf
(sax). Upon its
release,
Morph the Cat
received universal
acclaim and was later named Album of the Year by Mix Magazine.
Fagen was also given the Producer of the Year award. The 5.1 mix
of "Morph the Cat" won the 2007
Grammy Award
for Best Surround Sound
Album.

Hi Janese,
Thankyou for the
compliment...Johnny Crawford is doing great and I love his big
band stuff in California, he's doing quite well and looks
good..I always liked his singing, maybe I'm weird but his
voice rang true much like Wayne Newton's or Ricky Nelson...
Hi Mark,
There's nothing weird about you my
friend. Johnny's voice does ring true to Ricky. Maybe,
somewhat like Wayne but I think I like the Ricky comparison
more. My favorite Wayne Newton song "Red Roses For A Blue Lady".

Hi there
Another Brit to add to
the long and illustrious list. He had one of the all time
great music videos : )

your music spans several different genres. Your choice of
Johnny Crawford probably surprises me the most since he only
had about five hits that I can recall. I remember my copy

checked him out and found out that he is currently the leader of
the California-based "Johnny Crawford Orchestra"
which specializes in traditional jazz, early big band and
classical styles which I'm sure you were aware of when you made
this choice. Here's Johnny:

Hi all
Thought I would add Gene Pitney to this group. I havn't heard anything of his for a long time but he wrote a bunch of great songs and his "Town without Pity" was a huge hit. There was a movie by that name as well.
His 40-year career included hits such as "It Hurts to Be in Love," "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance," "Every Breath I Take," "Town Without Pity," "Only Love Can Break a Heart" and the operatic "I'm Gonna Be Strong." His last U.S. hit was "She's a Heartbreaker" in 1968.
Pitney was also a highly regarded songwriter -- he wrote the Crystals' No. 1 hit, "He's a Rebel," Rick Nelson's smash "Hello Mary Lou" and Bobby Vee's "Rubber Ball." Some of his own hits, though -- "Only Love," "Liberty Valance" and "Tulsa" -- were written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
He was an early subject of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound -- Spector produced Pitney's version of Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Every Breath I Take" as well as the Crystals' "He's a Rebel" -- and an early supporter of British bands such as the Rolling Stones. www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/05/obit.pitney/index.html">http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/05/obit.pitney/index.html

Today is the birthday of a member of Rock Royalty; no not the King or Sir Paul but none other than Mick Jagger...the frontman of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Born: July 26, 1943 in Dartford, Kent, England Years Active: 1969-2008 Member of: The Rolling Stones As the lead singer for the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger is one of the most popular and influential frontmen in the history of rock & roll. Jagger fronted the Rolling Stones for over 20 years before he began a solo career in 1985. www.basicfamouspeople.com/pictures/3206.jpg" />www.basicfamouspeople.com/index.php?aid=3206">http://www.basicfamouspeople.com/index.php?aid=3206 Diane
I have always loved Mick Jagger. There is just something about him. Call it animal magnetism or something but he's great. Saw him and the Stones in Chicago on the Licks tour 2002/2003 and that dude can rock. As I said before quoting Gilda Radner "Give me Mick, give me Mick, rock and roll me til you make me sick." LOL

Hi
One of the things I like about the daily info in the Today in Rock and Roll is that it reminds you of artists and songs that you havn't thought about for a while.
Today it reminded me of Wilson Pickett who belongs here. His songs were dancing songs!!!!
www.vh1.com/shared/media/images/sn_legacy/addict/AMG_images/artists/P02578.JPG" />
Of the major '60s soul stars, Wilson Pickett was one of the roughest and sweatiest, working up some of the decade's hottest dancefloor grooves on hits like "In the Midnight Hour," "Land of 1000 Dances," "Mustang Sally...
Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B/Rock and Roll and soul singer and songwriter known for his raw, raspy, passionate vocal delivery. A major figure in the development of American soul music, Pickett recorded over 50 songs which made the US R&B charts, and frequently crossed over to the pop charts as well. Among his best known hits are "In The Midnight Hour" (which he co-wrote), "Land of 1,000 Dances", "Mustang Sally", and "Funky Broadway". The impact of Pickett's songwriting and recording led to his 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Wilson Pickett had some of the greatest songs to get up and dance to of all time. I remember going to school dances and whenever you heard "Land of a 1000 Dances" you couldn't help but get up and dance. Another great memory is from the movie "The Great Outdoors" with John Candy and Dan Aykroyd at the end where they are dancing to this great song.

Well, Diane if they loved music as much as we do they'd be happy too! Everyone at work use to think I was pretty crazy too but I sure brought them plenty of laughs in a sometimes stressful environment and I know that helped them get through many tough days.

Hi Diane,
You are so much like me it's unreal. I have to find my picture of my cubicle on Valentine's Day. I made red and pink hearts and then used white doily paper and put pics of Jon Bon Jovi in the middle. He was all over my cubicle. I'll post it when I find it.
Great minds think alike. LOL
