My wife probably won't retire for another 6+ years. My medical insurance (Kaiser) is with her company. Do I need to have her employer enroll me in medicare coverage?
I'm planning on retiring in 3 months when I'm 66.6
I'm no expert, but my wife stayed on my insurance past her 65th birthday and we had to jump through some hoops when she finally signed up for Medicare. They wanted proof of coverage. I had to go back to my past employer and get the appropriate documentation and send it to Medicare. It definitely caused everyone some extra work and slowed her application. I wish we had signed her up when she turned 65. I feel like our Medicare/supplemental/part D coverage is better and cheaper than my former employers plan.
As far as signing up, I really think you have to do that yourself and then notify your employer when your application is approved. There are folks here that know more and they may correct me on that.
