As a 5th grader it was hands down:  Petula Clark's "Downtown".  When my daughter heard it when she was 8 or 9 she loved it too!  After that - 7th grade it was The Turtles "So Happy Together".  In HS it transitioned from Iron Butterfly to Moody Blues ...
