Tell us about yourself:
My undergraduate research fellowships 45 years ago were on trace element geochemistry of clays and California prehistoric ceramics by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Also funded was my ethnographic research in Yucatan Mexico. My graduate fellowships followed the same pattern. I have maintained this interest with related publications as recently as 2013. I earned a Social Science doctorate from the University of California, Irvine in 1976. My first post-doctoral jobs were in industrial polymer chemistry, and as a statistical analyst for social network studies in psychiatry. Psychiatry won my attention. For the next 9 years I was a medical researcher and professor of psychiatry. My principle psychiatry informant and boss was E. Mansell Pattison. By 1985 I was fed up with medical research and clinical work. I returned to archaeology where I directed large multi-site excavation projects. I helped negotiate the conflicting goals of Native American, developer, scientific, and government share-holders. Next I became Anthropology Curator and then Director of the Orange County Natural History Museum, and adjunct professor at Saddleback Community College. I have been honored for teaching and research. Over 20 undergraduate students had their first published research with me, as well as graduate students and post-docs. My later work in forensic taphonomy was certified for capital homicide expert witness status. I have worked homicides in California, Georgia, Tennessee, and Hawaii as both a police investigator consultant, and defense expert witness.
