An Affectionate Tale of Three Benches

When I entered the bus stop kiosk, I was happy to see my bus inching along in the distance. As I turned around, three heartwarming things occurred: a buoyant blond man walking by the kiosk recognized a deep-set, heavily tattooed compatriot who was sitting on a bench. After chatting for a second, they parted with a resounding fist bump. A young couple (a man and a woman) who had been inseparably standing under the kiosk decided to sit down. The man leisurely lowered himself onto a vacant bench. Instead of scooting beside him, the woman nestled on top of one of his knees. Then a dove fluttered above the other side of the bench. How appropriate! Nearby a homeless person pushing his cart slowly passed by. He looked famished. A pudgy man sitting on another vacant bench mentioned to him to stop. With a smile, he opened a bag and gave an apple and a bag of potato chips to the down-and-out guy who, slightly stunned, nodded in appreciation of this unexpected gift. It was an affecting tableau.

In the meantime, the bus, finally getting disentangled from clogged traffic, arrived. I was so glad that it took its time. Otherwise, I would have missed three inspiring scenes that showed humanity at its best: Sentimental perhaps, but also elemental.
