Always Felt Alone

Message 1 of 2

I was married.

It was 1968.

Still in college.

On Christmas break.

Life not lived.

Much too young.

20 years old

Still having fun.

Draft number called

I was afraid.

Feared being alone.

Decisions were made.

Husband joined Navy.

Was Viet Nam.

Left on ship.

I was calm.

See married wife

Got to go

along to base.

Away from home.

I learned later

didn't fear alone

So got married

didn't go home.

The marriage lasted

by most standards

It made it

Stuck by words.

Made it through

Bad as home

Finally decided that

Rather be alone.

Twenty eight years

Wife, Mother, Slave,

Lived in secret

Had to behave.

Best I could

To raise kids

Protecting them cost

Downward I slid.

I'm doing better

Kids are too

Never be perfect

Not trying to.
