A new Oregon law clamps down on age-related hiring questions, but more protections are needed across the country.
By Emily Paulin, AARP. Published May 30, 2025.
During Miki Hermanโs long and diverse career in business operations and strategy, incidents of workplace age discrimination cropped up more than once. โIโve actually been on both sides of it,โ said Herman, 76, a Portland resident and AARP Oregon volunteer, who is now retired.
In 2008, Herman was invited for a late-stage, in-person interview for a senior management role at a well-known Oregon-based company. She was prepared to explain how her skill set perfectly matched what the job required. But, instead, she was hit with probing questions about her stamina and fitness, she recalled.

There are SOME jobs us seniors CANNOT do & fighting to do them is NOT something I am interested in doing.
In my case at age 67, I NEED "regular" bathroom breaks and the "freedom" to come & go as I feel is appropriate.
When I retired in 2020 compliments of COVID, I "tried" returning to the workforce here in my Virginia Area. Was in NO HURRY to do so, but got BORED. ๐
(1) My PART TIME JOB became one with overtime and being called on my day off to come to work. Thankfully I was a member of the union (DIDNOT get fired for refusing extra hours) but got tired REALLY QUICKLY of the b..s & quit. Union told me to STAY. Why? To end up in the emergency room with a heart attack??? Hmmm, NO thank you.
(2) And restroom breaks!!!/lol ๐คฃ๐
I guess I was suppose to pee in my undies or wear diapers. NOT there yet & NOT trying to be. But as we AGE, we do need to go more often. ๐ค
โก๏ธ[*** Now there are SOME folks who WELCOME us old folks = hardworking, years of experience (NOT only textbook knowledge) & dependability.
I would suggest folks THANK those and spread the word. Maybe we will get MORE. Meanwhile, in my very humble opinion - PROVING Age Discrimination is hard to do, stressful & expensive.
Take care,
