10 Worst States for Age Discrimination on the Job.
Complaints of bias at work vary widely, depending on where you live. Our map can help.
By Kenneth Terrell, AARP. Published May 23, 2025.
Age discrimination on the job happens all over America, but a new analysis of federal data suggests that the state in which you are employed might make it more likely youโll encounter ageism at work.
Seniorly, a company that provides an online directory of senior living communities, looked at 2020-2024 data from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to find out how many age discrimination complaints the federal agency received on a state-by-state basis (including the District of Columbia). To be fair to states that have more residents โ meaning more opportunities for age discrimination complaints โ Seniorly converted those complaints to a โper 100,000 eligible workersโ basis.

(1) Is YOUR state one of the 10? ๐ค Happy to say my state Virginia is NOT.
(2) Have you dealt with AGE DISCRIMINATION? ๐ค If yes, tell us about it & how you handled it. I have NEVER as far as I know. In my very humble opinion, it is very hard to prove. Employers can "dig" up data to "legally" fire in the hopes you will leave QUIETLY. ๐ Personally at age 67, I only apply to gigs I KNOW will "appreciate" my years of experience, hard work & showing up.
To all the old folks out there STILL WORKING - hats off to you my friends. ๐
Take care,
