The garment district is electric! If you are into fashion (home sewing included) that is a truly inspiring place to walk.

It really depends on what you want to see. I always reccomend getting out of Manhattan. There is the Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo in the Bronx, with Bronx's Little Italy - Arthur Ave nearby. or the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, The Brooklyn Museum of Art and Propect Park. If you look through my blog - www.travelsinthe2ndhalf.com - I have a series of pieces call "The Real NYC"  - you might find some useful ideas there.

@retiredtraveler - It depends what you enjoy, really. Have you been to:

- The Statue of Liberty

- Top of the Empire State Building (or Freedom Tower)

- United Nations

- Central Park

- If you enjoy museums, there's the Museum of Natural History (west side), Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum & Frick Collection (all 3 east side), Holocaust Museum (close to ferries & Freedom Tower)

Do you have any 'must see's'?  I think I'm going to try for a trip in April, for 5 full days in the city. As mentioned, I have been to NY once. I would definitely do some of the same things --- Ellis Island, walk the length of Central Park. I didn't get to the Cloisters, which look interesting to me. We did walk through many neighborhoods -- by NYU, financial district, Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho.

Thanks. Yes. We saw this on a local PBS special that was about interesting, urban, parks. We covered a lot of ground on our one visit, but it's a big place............

If you're visiting NYC, you might also be interested in The High Line, which replaced a train line that was removed along the Hudson River: "NYC - The High Line"

I've only been to NYC once, but expect to spend some time there this year. I'll keep this in mind.

@JonathanL1961 - The upper west side of Manhattan can feel like a real neighborhood enclave, if you don't get distracted by the West Side Highway! I spent lots of time commuting that way, from midtown to the GW Bridge, when I was working.

A walk through the park on a cold winter's day can be a wonderful, if solitary, experience. Here is my piece about a walk alng the Hudson River just after Christmas. - https://goo.gl/QFQwKa
