I grew up with a mother who used a Grocery List & Budgets. She was a homemaker, my dad an engineer who was paid a salary monthly. There was NO "guessing" with her. She KNEW what she could SPEND once a month (we had a HUGE freezer) and it LASTED all month. I am doing the same with my Monthly Retirement Social Security. Lol, yes I get "tempted" every Monday (small refrigerator in Studio Apt) I food shop at Walmart. But as I AGE, I have learn't to "stick to" my Grocery List. Yes, they go up on PRICES at times = time to "readjust" my list as needed.
