How to receive SS statements on behalf of mom with Alzheimers

My mother has Alzheimers and lives in an assisted living facility. She still receives some mail, including social security statements. She's thrown away the tax statements twice now and I would like to just change the mailing address - not the deposits, not her residential address - as her POA so I can successfully prepare her taxes. How do I do this?

Hi, @SaraB884489

The SSA does not recoginize your POA but it should help you to get Representative Payee status with them.

SSA.gov - Representative Payee

By doing this, you can change the address of where the SS statement comes each year. OR if she doesn't already have one, set her up a SS account and then just print it from there.

Once you get this you should also become her Medicare representative if you aren't already.  Actually, no mail or statements should be coming to her at the Assisted Living Facility that has personal info on it at all.  The mail there is not secure.

She should have a legal address (yours as POA  for financial and legal matters, SS Representative Payee, and Medicare Representative) and she should have a physical address (hers) for friends and family to sent cards or notes and perhaps her area for medical care and insurance.

The report which SSA ask Representative Payees to do isn't hard at all since you are POA have this info at hand.
