Effects of COVID-19 on Social Security

Dear fellow AARP members,

While DJT was rationalizing his imminent demise in November, two critical pieces of legislation were introduced.

(1) H.R. 7499 Social Security COVID Correction and Equity Act https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/7499/text#toc-HAADA61B6E16C44CEBEFBB4DF326C7...  and

(2) S. 4180 Protecting Benefits for Retirees Act. https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/4180/actions?r=3&s=1

In addition to these two bills, I urge you to also read the testimony of

Stephen C Gross given to the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security https://www.ssa.gov/legislation/testimony_071720.html

and

AARP Statement for the record before the Senate Finance Committee Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy https://www.aarp.org/content/dam/aarp/politics/advocacy/2020/12/aarp-statement-for-the-record-to-sen...

Finally, if anyone would be interested in helping me ensure that these bills gets passed in this legislative session, please pm me or email me direct: mrk_bruns@hotmail.com

Sincerely,

Mark Bruns

I believe, they were actually introduced in July 2020 however since we have passed into a new legislative session - they have to be RE-introduced into THIS Congress.

For those who might have a hard time understanding what these (2) pieces of legislation would do - they are similar - one from the House, one from the Senate - the AARP has explained the problem HERE:

Persoanlly, I think we have more than just this problem with Social Security - until the overall financial health of the program is fix for the long term - this would just add to the long term problem.  That's been part of the problem all along - for years we have added things and added things but we haven't made up for it in comparable revenues.  Automation has taken its tole, number of people working to support those on the benefit hasn't kept up.

Like I said I am willing to listen but I think maybe it should be part of an overall reform.

If you see the new legislation numbers, let me know.
