Benefits for Both

As the way I understand; but I hope I am wrong about this topic. When my husband and I get ready to retire in a few years do we both get to collect our amount that is allowed? I heard that one of us will not collect our full amount because we are married. The way I look at this is if I paid into SS all my working years then I should be entitled to my full amount. The same for my husband.

If this is true that we only get a portion then where is the rest going. I hope not paying the illegals.

If you both have the required earning and time period of working to be vested and are still alive, each of you will get your own benefit for as long as you live.

However, at Full Retirement Age (FRA), if one of the spouse has a very low benefit, it might be wise to check if the spousal benefit is higher.  The spousal benefit is 50% of the other spouses benefit.

Widow / Widowers benefits are different.

Early retirement at age 62 also reduces the benefit by a % for this early filing.

cat0w is right, you should BOTH sign up for your individual mySocialSecurity account.

This is your individual record and there is lots of good info there and you can even get your SS statement there to see what your benefit will be at FRA.  When you get ready to retire, you can even make your filing via this account.

It is also a good idea to set up this account for each of you because there has been some scammers actually making up peoples' account and filing for their benefit - names and social security numbers have a way of making it into the hands of criminal especially since there have been so many breaches in the last few years.

Once you set up this account you will have your own user name and password so that nobody can set up an account criminally and file for your benefits.
