AARP Eye Center
I am a savvy businesswoman, fit, worldly, and aware of the scammers out there. I have watched videos about how they do it...yet last week I remained on a call long enough to allow them to ignite my brain into involuntary action and do something I would never ever in a million years think is an ok thing to do...clear my accounts and feed the bills into a crypto machine.
After I finally broke the spell, I went reeling into the mind games of what if's, how could I, this is impossible, or maybe I have gone mad.
I began writing about this experience as I went through a myriad of terrible emotions. And when I shared them, I found out that so many of my friends and neighbors had also experienced a feeling of being under remote control, autopilot, acting involuntarily.
I am sharing the thoughts I have had since then as I learn about the incredible power of the amygdala as it is activated into fight-or-flight mode, a protective mechanism that developed through evolution to keep us safe in danger, but is now misguided in our modern, tiger-less world.
I hope to share these thoughts with as many people as possible so they can both understand what their loved ones may be going through after being scammed and to help find some self-compassion when they have experienced a scam themselves. Being amygdala hijacked is not much different than being held at gun point. So why hold onto a sense of blame when you were held hostage by the triggering words of the scammer.
Please feel free to visit Kindle Vella, where I am posting my progress coming up out of the despair of being robbed and feeling like my soul was violated. This platform allows me to move the posts off of my personal social media and into the public realm so more people can read and share. It is free to read the first three posts, which are the gist of my thoughts on this. You can find my post on Amazon Vella directly by searching (I am not clicking on any links shared with me any more!!) the title
I hope to be able to share the stories of others who have also experienced this anonymously there too, so they can both have the relief of sharing something that may sit deep in shame, and help others understand that is was beyond their control.
