"Hi Dr. Richard,โ the text to Amy Nofziger began. โI was playing with my puppy today and noticed a lump under his nipple.โ The stranger requested an exam and included a photo of her puppyโs belly.
Like so many of us, Nofziger, director of AARPโs Fraud Network, gets loads of fake wrong number texts โ a tactic scammers use to engage you โ but the sophistication and imagination of this one surprised her (theyโre often simply, โDo you want to meet for dinner?โ or something more straightforward, as we explain in this story). โIf I wasnโt aware that theyโre using emotional manipulation, I would have said, โSorry, you have the wrong number. I hope your puppy is okay,โโ says Nofz.
