Oh no! "early Purple" was never an orchid!  Cat Wink I'm a die-hard DP fan, of course!!

 

But there was a significant change from the progressive-psychedelic rock of Mark 1 "early Purple" to the hard rock metal of Mark 2. A lot of fans didn't catch on to DP until they hit Mark 2 in 1970. You can hear the difference in these two classic rock ballads - -
