Soundtrack of the Greatest Generation - Glenn Miller, US City & State songs

American bandleader Glenn Miller was the superstar of his era. From a modest start he became one of the best-selling artists of his time. 81 years ago this month he was awarded the the first gold record for his single โ€œChattanooga Choo Choo.โ€  Despite his wealth and fame, the attack on Pearl Harbor inspired him to join the U.S. armed forces where he supported the war effort through his music. His tragic disappearance over the English Channel on December 15, 1944, remains one of World War IIโ€™s unsolved mysteries. Over nearly a century his music has touched people and inspired musicians.

His โ€œChattanooga Choo Chooโ€ lends to this weekโ€™s music blog theme, songs about US cities and states.  Songs on the list either contain a city or state in their title, or featured prominently in their lyrics.  Songs range from โ€œSweet Home Alabamaโ€ to โ€œHotel California,โ€ โ€œHollywood Nights,โ€ โ€œMidnight Train To Georgia,โ€ โ€œSweet Home Chicago,โ€ โ€œPlease Come To Boston,โ€ โ€œCarolina In My Mindโ€, โ€œPhiladelphia Freedom,โ€ โ€œWalking In Memphis,โ€ โ€œGraceland,โ€ โ€œEl Paso,โ€ of course โ€œChattanooga Choo Choo,โ€ and the playlistโ€™s title song โ€œNew York State Of Mind.โ€

There are some songs that donโ€™t have a city or state in their title, but feature a city or state prominently in their lyrics, such as โ€œDancing In The Streetsโ€ (multiple: Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, WDC, Detroit), โ€œTake It Easyโ€ (Winslow, Arizona), โ€œRock โ€˜N Meโ€ (Phoenix, Arizona, Tacoma, Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.), โ€œRocky Mountain Highโ€ (Colorado), โ€œBad, Bad Leroy Brownโ€ (Chicago), โ€œDirty Waterโ€ and โ€œRock & Roll Bandโ€ (Boston), and โ€œDeacon Bluesโ€ (Alabama), among others.

I hope that this music and my blog truly serve as a โ€œrevival: a new presentation of something old,โ€ a springboard to return to the music of your youth, or perhaps to find artists you want to discover anew.  Rediscover the passion of music in your life.  Live in the moment.  Enjoy the moment.  Love the moment.  Listen to the MUSIC!

Great concept. I scrolled through the songs and you list many songs. Either I missed the following song or it did not qualify. The song has been covered by many including the Big Band (i.e., Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians), jazz (Louis Armstrong), country (Willie Nelson) to name a few. I've read that it has been released by more than a thousand. Although the song was written close to a hundred years ago (1925), many of us first heard it as the whistled version theme song for the Harlem Globetrotters (early 1950s) unless our parents were musical. There are words that start with, "No gal made has got a shade on .... Sweet Georgia Brown". If you are accepting suggestions, it is a classic.

No Beatles songs on this list, though ๐Ÿ˜ž . I have a list I'll eventually share on world cities and countries - the Fab 4 make it with "Back In The USSR"...
