Songs With Great Lyrics and Great Music, Too

Think of songs where the musical introduction is so great that you can't wait for the song - or maybe don't even care for the song.

Or it is so recognizable that you rush to turn the music off (I'm thinking Freebird here)

Or maybe it's a solo or musical section in the middle of the song that brings the lyrics all together.and sounds so good.

Or a long musical song ending that is amazing.

Songs with music that you just love - or songs with music that instantly identifies the song - or songs where the music is actually better than the rest of the song!

Anthem (or anything by Leonard Cohen):

"Ring the bells that still can ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in everything

That's how the light gets in"

Stairway to heaven  Led Zeppelin

It was mentioned a ways back, but I have

to say it has one of the most recognizable

intros of any rock song. The guitar work that

makes up this song is incredible, the lyrics even more amazing. Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, comes

that moment at 5:36 in (for me lol) when the song goes to a whole new level. Hands down one of the best rock songs out there and their absolute

masterpiece.

I have heard it said that back in the day, JP was the only guitarist who could upstage the frontman.  Just someone's opinion.  The trial over the intro was a little weird. JP on the stand was something to hear, especially when they asked if he considered himself a good guitarist.

Keeping the Faith-Billy Joel

Magic Carpet Ride  -  Steppenwolf

It's about getting lost in the music from the sound machine, taking a magic carpet ride, and the music just takes me right along with them. Opens with a strange whirling, buzzing, sound like staring up a machine then bam on the electric guitar. The song then grooves off into psychedelic space! My favorite Steppenwolf song.

In the air tonight  Phil Collins.  From the

haunting intro, the drums rule in this song,

especially 3:16 in. Great lyrics also

Immigrant Song  Led Zeppelin. I definitely have a song "type" and this is it. As soon as the first ah-ah-ah starts, I am hooked!  Amazing lyrics are the icing on the cake 🎂

"We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow

The hammer of the Gods

W'ell drive our ships to new lands

To fight the horde, and sing and cry

Valhalla,I am coming!"

Hey nineteen   Steely Dan

Soon as they hit that first note, I am

singing along. The tune is catchy, as all

their songs are and the lyrics are pure gold 💛

Witch Queen of New Orleans  Redbone

The intro is a drumstick being used

on a guitar. The beat of the song is

haunting and the lyrics clever and

catching. A great song from an

underrated band, imo

In my life is one of my favs also. It is my brothers fav Beatles song too. He has three daughters and they each sang this song with their class at high school graduation. They graduated in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Pretty amazing for a song released in 1965!
