PROTEST & REBELLION SONGS.."get it off your chest"

The only stipulation here is that the song should be commentary,  controversial, expressing a rebellious, protesting "frame of mind"; generally, or speciffically, about society, culture, economics, wealth, poverty, politics, war, peace, relationships, etc, etc, etc.

How about some songs which, when you heard them, you thought, "Yeh, those lyrics tell it like it is!" or maybe you were offended by the controversial lyrics.

Your song selection may be from any time period in history and about any topic you choose, old songs and new songs.

Please be free to post protest & rebellion songs which either you agreed with or which "honked" you off.

Here is an opportunity to "Get it off your chest!" Go ahead and briefly include memorable lyrics of the song if you like [ if you remember 🙂 ]

To begin.....here's a protest song:     Subterranean Homesick Blues     Bob Dylan

Laurie42010: Looking for a song where the artist is taking advantage of the followers? I think he means this as a joke, but "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh comes to mind. https://youtu.be/ss9VZ1FHxy0

Laurie42010 - I've heard that "You're So Vain" was written about David Geffen. I've also heard that Joni Mitchell's "Free Man In Paris" was written about him, too.

Nope. "You're so Vain" was about Warren Beatty. Carly Simon reavelaed that in 2015. (great song! And I'm glad that somene else brought up, "That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be")

I heard it was Beatty, too, until I read this in Wikipedia:

"In November 2015, Simon, promoting her about-to-be-published memoir, said, "I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren (Beatty)" and added that while "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him," he is the subject of that verse only, with the remainder of the song referring to two other, still unnamed men."[3]

But maybe she's just still stringing us all along.

San Franciscan Nights: The Animals (always considered this a protest song in a generalized way, despite its not specifically referencing the Vietnam war).

Time Has Come Today: The Chambers Brothers (perhaps started out as psychedelic rock, but adopted by protest groups as meaning that it’s “time” for change). Saw them in the summer of ‘68 at the NY World’s Fairgrounds in the Singer Bowl, performing with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company and The Soft Machine. Not a bad lineup...
