PROTEST & REBELLION SONGS.."get it off your chest"

The only stipulation here is that the song should be commentary,  controversial, expressing a rebellious, protesting "frame of mind"; generally, or speciffically, about society, culture, economics, wealth, poverty, politics, war, peace, relationships, etc, etc, etc.

How about some songs which, when you heard them, you thought, "Yeh, those lyrics tell it like it is!" or maybe you were offended by the controversial lyrics.

Your song selection may be from any time period in history and about any topic you choose, old songs and new songs.

Please be free to post protest & rebellion songs which either you agreed with or which "honked" you off.

Here is an opportunity to "Get it off your chest!" Go ahead and briefly include memorable lyrics of the song if you like [ if you remember 🙂 ]

To begin.....here's a protest song:     Subterranean Homesick Blues     Bob Dylan

There are so many that I remember:  Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds of Silence; and

Peter Paul and Mary - Where Have All The Flowers Gone;  are two that come to mind. I remember doing a high school paper on One Tin Soldier too.

Long as we're on Irish (man there are SO many protest songs from them!) - "Risin' o' the Moon" (vaious authors) or Dominic Behan's "Patriot Game".

Another John Denver song that could be considered a protest piece: "Gospel Changes". Mary Travers did this on one of her solo albums, too.

@ws54362   Sadly, we'll probably be hearing more of the Irish protest songs, with the Troubles threatening to return.  My family roots are NI, and I have friends in Derry.  They're very concerned.

Someone mentioned The Mitchell Trio, with John Denver. John did several protest songs as a solo, too. He did "Jimmy Newman" (by Tom Paxton) but he also did "Prisoners" and "The Readjustment Blues". Oh, and "The Ballad of Richard Nixon".

I thnk of Tom Paxton, and probably the shortest protest song ever:
"I sing of Spiro Agnew, and all the things he's done" (followed by silence...)

John Denver did that one, as well.
