...A BAND ON THE ROCKS - Excerpt #1 (The Beatles)

(From "BABYSITTING A BAND ON THE ROCKS" - available at Newbury Comics locations throughout the Northeast and online at LTCDS.com > Webstore > Books).

"...For Kath, this was not just another Sunday; she was poised
to lose all control as Ed was about to introduce the Beatles for the
very first time. Like most young girls her age, Kath had heard that
the Fab Four were all the rage, and she had worked herself up for
this night since the day that Ed had announced it. The center panel
of her desk that doubled as a vanity lay open to utilize its otherwise
hidden mirror; Kath had been primping as if the lads performing
tonight would actually be able to see her in her bedroom all the
way from the theatre at Broadway and 54th.

When John, Paul, George and Ringo hit the stage youโ€™d think
it was the Second Coming. No, I take that back; Jesus himself
would not have received such a rapturous reception. (John later
said so, himself, and caught a lot of **bleep** for it.) The sea of screaming
girls that packed Edโ€™s studio rendered anything the Beatles played
virtually inaudible, and Kath screamed along with them, as I
imagine was the case all across America. They say that more than
70 million of us were watching. Bill and I covered our ears while
our parents studied our sister with fear and disbelief.

โ€œI really donโ€™t see what all the fuss is about,โ€ my Mom blurted
with exasperation once The Beatles had finished โ€œShe Loves You,โ€
the final song of their opening set. โ€œTheyโ€™re just a bunch of mop
heads making loud music!โ€

โ€œYou call that music?โ€ Dad chimed in with disgust. โ€œNow
Glenn Miller, Sinatra...thatโ€™s music. And these guys look like a
bunch of girls!โ€

My fourteen-year-old sister turned to scowl at their
objections, brie y ungluing her attention from the TV but
remaining speechless, unable to respond to my parentsโ€™ disparaging
comments about her newfound obsession.

My brother and I? We looked at each other with โ€œWhat the
hell was that?โ€ in our eyes, but we not-so-secretly wished we could
do it, too. Making noise and making girls scream was easy. But to
make them love it? It couldnโ€™t get better than that..."

February 9, 1964. Although I was so young, I remember that night like it was yesterday. Me and my even younger brother and my Mom watching those mop top lads on the Ed Sullivan show. I was smitten with them right away. Amazed. Impressed. In love with them all, but most especially with Paul, who spent a lot of time hanging on my walls as I grew up. Their music was amazing and I was mesmerized. All these years later, I still love them just as much as I did back then. If Iโ€™m having a bad day, their music always helps me feel better. Their music spans many generations and occasions. I even played one of their songs at my husbands funeral, as he too, loved them. (It was Two of Us, one of my favs) Thank you for sharing

At @BeatleloverKT  Can totally relate to your bad day metaphor....for me...Got to have my Eric Clapton to help me through the fog of life and then also some Tom Petty to give me the courage to stand up and possibly kick some ass with the high road theology. Smiley Very Happy  Smiley LOL
