we learned the hard way about which taxi to use in the city.  The black taxis charge double what a yellow cab will.  We took a black taxi from Brooklyn Red Hook to the 9/11 museum and it cost over $50.  Before we got in we were told it would cost $40 and when he dropped us off over a block away it was $52.  The same trip back in a yellow cab cost $26 which included the tip.  Also, if it's a cloudy day, don't waste your money going up to the observation deck in the World Tower.  You won't be seeing much.  And if you want to visit the 9/11 Museum or go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, book ahead on line.  They have good discounts for retirees, military, police, and firemen.
