A great way to save money on food in San Francisco is to have a fridge in your hotel room. We usually eat breakfast in our hotel room. For breakfast we eat leftover lunch, from the day before or snacks we picked up from the Walgreens. We eat lunch out and have dinner in our room, usually food we pickup in Chinatown or from the European Deli's in the Richmond District or the pizza place near powell street.

Fruits and vegetables and food in general cost less in Chinatown and the Richmond District than the ferry building or the farmers market that is near city hall.

The money we save goes towards expensive sightseeing.
