Spent almost 50 years in D.C. -- don't even try to drive in town on a weekday. Stay in the subs (Arlington, Alexandria in Virginia are my picks) and either Metro in or find a hotel that will shuttle you in.  If you stay in town, experience the Willard, Hilton or J.W. Marriott -- close to White House and Mall. Get with your Congressional office well ahead of time to make arrangements for visits to Capitol Hill. Lunch is quite reasonable (for D.C.) at National Gallery. Good shoes and plenty of water. Have fun with the street vendors . . .
