No one wants to be a burden when they retire, but many aging parents at least have the safety net of children they can turn to for support if needed.
Among 55-year-old Americans, nearly 1 in 4 believe they will need financial help from family as they age, and more than 1 in 5 expect to need housing support, according to Prudentialโs 2024 โPulse of the American Retiree Survey.โ Some will likely look to their kids or grandkids.

[Tuesday 3/4/25] I do have an only child, a daughter but I believe in having a backup plan just in case she dies BEFORE I do. Also, I am NOT expecting any financial help from her as I age. That is NOT the reason we had planned her for. It would be nice to know someone will bury (cremate) me. Some of us on this site had spoken about this for old folks with NO family. Thank you AARP for publishing this article for us.
