I remember when President Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated. I was in Junior High. It was a very sad time for the whole country.

I was born on Aug. 6, 1949, four years to the day after the bombing of Hiroshima Japan.  I remember the air raid drills, pictures of the bombing every year on my birthday and horrid images of the people who were disfigured by the A Bomb.

I also remember rock and roll, Beatnicks, the Beatles coming to NYC as I was walking past Penn Station and thousands of screaming girls mobbing the train station.  What they didn't know was the Beatles got off a few stops before Penn Station.

I remember getting into the tail end of the Beat era, moving into the Flower Child era and graduating into a full blown Hippie.  While I still have a bit of the Hippie within me, I am now a Christian and a Conservative.  This progression was born of seeing how socialism just does not work after obtaining my degree in Liberal Arts/Social Science and working in Human Services for over 30 yrs.

I am now a member of the Tea Party and see it as the main source of saving this country from the destructive direction it is heading in.  I am too old and wise to buy the redudent rhetoric that results in empty promises, broken hopes and dreams and the destruction of the Greatest Nation On Earth!

Every weekend there was a dance in the gym, with different rock bands.  We rode the bus to the 5 & 10 and shopped the stores downtown before there were malls.  Bell bottom and hip hugger jeans with crop tops were the rage.  We grew our hair down to our butts.  In the summer we walked to the pool and in the lounge afterwards watched I Love Lucy.  We rode our bikes to the grocery store and bought candy and movie star magazines.  I organized a talent show with the kids in the neighborhood.  The stage was our front porch.  The beach and midway with all the rides was the most fun on a date.

You had a back up skate key,or wore one on a string around your neck.
You watched the test pattern on TV before the programming started for the day.
You listened to the Lord's Prayer or the Star-Spangled Banner at the end of the TV broadcast day.
Saturday mornings were reserved for cartoon watching.
Sundays you even watched Crusader Rabbit and Davy and Goliath!
You walked home from school to eat lunch.
The Flintstones and Top Cat were on prime time TV.
Kids in the neighborhood played games together outside in the summertime like Red Rover, Red Light Green Light and Statue.
You knew all of the jingles to the beer and cigarette commercials on TV.
You listened to the theme from The Untpuchables from your bedroom because it was on after bedtime.
You waited for the teacher on Romper room to say that she saw you in her magic mirror.
You had an aluminum Christmas tree with a rotating color wheel.
You wore candy necklaces on elastic strings that made your neck all sticky.
You could buy Slowpokes, Kitts, Batts, All Day Suckers, Flying Saucers, Snirkles, Chuckles, Chunkys, Nickle Nips, Candy Buttons, etc, from almost any dime store.
You remember what a dime store was (or the Five and Dime) .
You still own some of the 45’s and albums from your childhood even if you don't have a working turntable.
You would stay up late and look at pictures through you Give a Show projector.
Thanks for the memories! I could go on and on.

... you had a computer without a mouse. It had a CRT screen and you used WordStar. You had to type a DOS string to get into your programs which came on about 12 real floppy disks.

Only Captian Kirk and his crew had cell phones, then called "communicators."

Cereals actually had the word "sugar" on the box.

TV shows announced that they were in color.

You walked around with a candy cigarette hanging out of your mouth.

You sang along to the songs of the original Mickey Mouse Club.

You remember shows like Shinanigans and Wonderama (East Coast).

You remember Paul McArtney's original group.

You know what "don't touch that dial" means.

This is fun. I could keep going. Smiley LOL

penny candy cost penny. you could get pop beads out of a gumball machine.

dellwood delivered milk in bottles everyday and put them in the metal box on your front steps.

dugans would deliver cake to your house and they had great coffee rings.

bleach was also delivered to your house.

you played marbles, jacks, and hopscotch on the sidewalk.you played stickball in the street.

you could walk for miles without fear. and on halloween you could go for blocks and blocks getting loads af candy without your parents.you had bikes and roller skates with a key that you were always misplacing and you didn't wear helmets or knee pads and survived.you were supposed to be home when the streetlights came on, but i was usually late.

if a neighbor told you to stop something you were doing if it was wrong, you listened and didn't flip them the bird. in fact you didn't even know what that meant.

like so many others i remember the exact spot i was when i heard president kennedy was killed.

i wish there was a way to get all the things that were good at that time here and try to fix all that wasn't.God bless America.

Penny candy didn't cost a quarter. You could leave the corner store with a bag of candy from your "allowance".
The moon walk was not performed by Michael Jackson. All eyes were glued on Walter Cronkite.
Roller skates had wheels and a key.
